I sewed my first quilt from the "quilt in a day" Irish Chain book, too! I was 13 at the time and loved it and found it very easy to follow(and this was before they were printed with glossy pages throughout). I also own this:

My favourite by far is:
http://www.amazon.com/Magic-Pillows-Hidden-Quilts-Hellaby/dp/0954092813/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1243599057&sr=1-1There are so many great quilt designs that are fun to create, and easy enough for a beginner. There are clear directions on all stages of the process and lots of pictures to get your creative juices flowing. (Even though this book tells you how to fold your quilts into pillows, I have never actually done this and I have made several quilts from ideas in this book)
Good luck and happy quilting!
