    on: May 28, 2009, 11:34:05 AM
i am a new sewer and would LOVE to learn how to make a quilt. does anyone know of a great book, geared toward newibes that has lots of photos (i'm really visual and need to SEE the process) in it?

i'd be so grateful for any suggestions!

My cousin loaned me this one:
      http://www.amazon.com/Machine-Quilting-Techniques-Sue-Nickels/dp/1574328301/ref=sr_1_6?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1243542277&sr=8-6

I really like it.  It has some cool quilting patterns aside from the typical stippling pattern.

You can also check out Elizabeth's (of Oh Fransson!) quilt-along.  Lots of pics and great descriptions.  I like how it's split up into very natural steps.

I find that the "quilt in a day" series is great for someone who is just learning.  I sewed my first quilt using the Irish chain book.  It has lots of pictures and has great "step by step" directions.  The log cabin one is a great started quilt.  The books are sold at Joanns and are pretty inexpensive if purchased with a coupon.

I sewed my first quilt from the "quilt in a day"  Irish Chain book, too!  I was 13 at the time and loved it and found it very easy to follow(and this was before they were printed with glossy pages throughout).    I also own this:
http://www.amazon.com/Quilting-first-time-Donna-Kooler/dp/1402717687/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1243598961&sr=8-1    Which I used to make my second quilt, and I often turn to it for directions on binding and backing even when not making quilts from the book.

My favourite by far is:  http://www.amazon.com/Magic-Pillows-Hidden-Quilts-Hellaby/dp/0954092813/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1243599057&sr=1-1

There are so many great quilt designs that are fun to create, and easy enough for a beginner.  There are clear directions on all stages of the process and lots  of pictures to get your creative juices flowing.  (Even though this book tells you how to fold your quilts into pillows, I have never actually done this and I have made several quilts from ideas in this book)

          Good luck and happy quilting!

The book that got me started on quilting was Last Minute Patchwork and Quilted Gifts by Joelle Hoverson. The projects are grouped by how time intensive they are. I started by making a few of the simpler projects and feel like they gave me skills to start quilting full stop!

I Want to second Last minute patchwork and quilted gifts.  The little quilted coasters were one of my first stabs at quilting... so easy it gave me the confidence to start an actual quilt Smiley  So far so good on the quilt!

I used "Quilts! Quilts! Quilts!" by McClun & Nownes to get started.  It is a good reference book for me as far as the basics of the process.  I would recommend it.

Quilts, Quilts, Quilts! is an excellent beginner book. I made one of my very first quilts based on a project in that book.

I've loved my Last Minute Quilted Gifts for simple ideas that progress toward more difficult ones.  The projects are both modern and traditional.  I also used an encyclopedia of sorts from the library to help me with basics.  Good luck!
