"Fast and cheap" spring skirt!

    "Fast and cheap" spring skirt!
    on: May 29, 2009, 09:33:31 AM
Ok, this might come off really stupid.... (am prepared for that) - I've read this tutorial about 20 times, and feel like I'm missing something. Well, it uses a twin sheet, 72" wide, with elastic waist - Do I measure the elastic where I want the skirt to fall, on my waist/hips and use that for the 'end width' as in once I finish the skirt it will scrunch up? Seems like it will be way to big? I mean I have giant, CHILD BEARING HIPS, so I need it fluffy and big =)  but....

Am I making sense? Am I looking at this backwards  and I've created a problem that doesn't exist? Should I just shut up and do it? =)

    Thanks!
    M

When I use elastic (usually it's pajama panats), I measure around where I want the skirt/pant to fall.  Once you sew the elastic together it will make a smaller loop.  You can also trim one or two inches off the length before, also.

Ok, still being difficult, I'm not trying to...this is just how my mind works.

So, do I "Stretch" the elastic out, while I measure or leave it loose?

(sorry, I know it seems obvious...)

        Thanks!

I don't usually stretch it out, but make sure it's hugging your waist/hips.  Like I said, once you overlap or trip a bit, it will stretch a bit once you put the skirt on.

So if your hip measurements are 29 (hahaha, I wish mine were), you will probably cut approximately 29" of elastic.  You'll probably lose 1-2 inches once you overlap the end to sew the loop closed.  I think (I haven't done this in awhile) I would probably cut 28" and then overlap the ends by 1 inch (therefore losing 2 inches).  It's worked pretty well for me and my pants aren't rolling up my hips.

That makes sense, I just wanted to be sure. As I've never really used/worked with elastic waists before!

            Thanks so much!
            Have a good weekend!

Put it up to you & see what feels comfortable. Once you have done it you will see how easy it is.

Yay, I'm glad to hear!  I need to get my butt moving on the whole summer skirt thing...
