White quilting fabric

I love the look of quilts with white sashings or white as a base with brights (in, say, flying geese).  But is it completely impractical (in the laundry sense) to make a quilt with this look for a young kid?  Or can you recommend a white fabric that washes up nicely?

Since kids don't eat in bed, I don't see why not. My girls have had quilts in their room with a mostly white background since they were 4 and 6.

Why not a sheet?  The fabric is definitely washable and one provides a ton of yardage.
