Which old Singer to choose?

    Which old Singer to choose?
    on: May 31, 2009, 08:35:32 PM
I was recently offered a Singer 1425 or 9113 by someone who doesn't know anything about the machines. Is one better than the other? Both appear to be slant shank models. I've never used one of those. Are they preferable to other shank types or is it just a matter of preference?

Thanks for any info you can provide - Google has let me down (or maybe my Google skills are on the fritz).

If you could, I would recommend trying both machines to see if you have a preference.  You could like the reverse button on one better than the other.  One may have a more sensitive foot control compared to the other.  One may have the stitches you may use more.
I have no direct experience with these models, but I know some sewers like the slanted shank.

Thanks! I was hoping for horror/glee stories about the models. However, preference is really subjective. So, I decided to take both. : ) The 1425 has 23 stitches and was produced between 82-85 & the 9113 has 13 stitches and was made between 91-93. I'm taking them both in for service quotes so they can tell me which is the "better" machine.

You're right that it is really subjective as to which is better. I currently sew on a Montgomery Ward from the 1960's and it has been great, even through several fabrics. I don't have a manual for my current machine and I am very new to sewing. Both of the "new" machines have manuals (yay!).

I also wanted the extra machines for when friends come over to sew they wouldn't have to lug theirs and also to have them set up for different tasks/fabrics.
