    Swimsuits
    on: June 03, 2009, 11:42:05 AM
I'm thinking more and more about sewing myself and the kids swimsuits this year.  (Isn't $100 just way too much to pay for such little things?)  Anyone have any experience sewing these?  I've done some poking around the web and it seems to be relatively easy, costs little and takes no time.  Hmmm- sounds too good to be true!
I would love to hear from any of you who've tried it or have any tips you'd like to share.

    Thanks!

I haven't tried in a long time.  I used to make my bathing suits when I was a teenager (and had more courage).  I just remember that spandex is very slippery.  I used some of that double sided seam tape to keep the seams in place while I sewed.  It helped a lot!

Other than that, I made my son a pair of swim trunks a couple of weeks ago.  http://www.flickr.com/photos/tawnybee/3518683561/in/set-72157617867262021/

I didn't have a pattern, but I just made regular shorts and made the lining pattern a bit smaller with elastic around the legs and sewed it all together.  Turned out great!

I think you should be fine making a swim suit.  It'll cost half the price (even less) and you'll have a one of a kind outfit!  Grin

I made Burdastyle's Alison swimsuit last year (http://www.burdastyle.com/patterns/show/3803) and it was really easy.  I used a fairly thick 4 way stretch lyrca (totally necessary which becomes obvious when you look at the pattern pieces which seem quite small indeed) and didn't find it too difficult to sew at all.  I just used a stretch needle and went really slow.
