Anyone have a PFAFF hobbylock 786?
on: June 22, 2009, 05:08:16 PM
...and would you buy a used one that was "barely used"? I want a serger as I've been making a lot of clothes for my kids but don't have much of a budget for one. This one is listed in our local classifieds. Any thoughts? Suggestions?
Thanks!

Grab it! You might have to search for someone who will get parts and service it for you, but you will only see them once a year for maintenance.

I'm a Pfaff fan ( I own a 7570 and a CV.) that said, i sold my Hobbylock and got a Babylock because when you are using a serger, getting the thing threaded and the tensions balanced are what you do not want to spend time on - you want to SEW. A used Eclipse from a reputable Bayalock dealer will make your life easier, with autmatic threading and tension balance.

Thanks for the input. I'm just a bit nervous buying used. What would you pay for one that's only been used about 6 times but is at least 12 years old? I have a number in mind but am curious if I'm being too hopeful.

It depends on what the original MSRP was and what features the serger has.
If I was going to buy a new serger it would be the Viking Huskylock 936, it has all the bells and whistles I want. Buying used, it makes complete sense to go towards a Pfaff. Pre-platform change there is nothing like them. Any of them that are German built will last a lifetime.

Aww, so sorry to hear that. Sergers are a great addition to anyone's sewing room and that one really is a nice model. If you keep your eyes open maybe you will get lucky and find something similar - best wishes!
