Adjusting the stitch length on Electroic Singer Machine

Undecided  I have a new Singer Electronic 7470 that I just love. However, when I started to finish a quilt with it the book gives instructions for Hand Look Quilting Stitch but it is too vague to use.  Does anyone have any idea how I lengthen the stitches to give me a quilting stitch and when I increase the tension it makes it worse(part of the instructions) and should I have a quilting foot to perform this task?  Is mentions none of this in my book. I wnet to the Singer site and downloaded a PDF copy of the manual.  The instruntions to adjust the stitch length on on page 28, item number 2, titled "Multifunction Buttons".

You can get the pdf version of the manual for free by going to http://www.singerco.com/accessories/manuals.html and typing your model number into the box.

I would suggest a walking foot, but you could try it with just your regular foot.   You can also machine quilt with just a regular straight stitch.
