    Frayed hemline on skirt?
    on: July 18, 2009, 06:10:43 PM
Can anyone point me in the right direction for how to finish a skirt hemline with a frayed edge?  I'm working with linen and the bottom of the skirt house a flounce.

    Thanks!

Sorry omama, your question is a bit unclear.  Do you want to achieve a frayed hem line on the skirt, or do you want to fix it?    If you want to know how to make it fray, I suggest you use matching thread to sew a line of small stitches (stitch length about 1.5 or 2) as far from the edge of the fabric as you want the fraying to start.  Next, use a stitch un pick or large darning needle and lay the hem out on a table or ironing board and gently pull the horizontal threads out towards you a few at a time. As you are using linen, you will find this comes away fairly easily.  When you reach the stitching line, brush all the frayed bits downward and trim off any threads that are too long.  Hope I'm on the right track here:)  Barb.

Yes, I want to create a frayed hem.  Thanks for the tips.  I think I'll give it a go for the skirt I'm doing for the sew-along.

          Thanks again.
