Material for Lining

    Material for Lining

This is a totally amateur question, but what is a good material to line a little girl's dress?  The obvious choice to me would be cotton, but it is very hot where we live and even two layers of cotton seems too much.  Is there something else?  Thanks.

I think that's a good question actually. I often like to line a dress with a similar material as the outside fabric. You can go with a much thinner cotton such as a batiste or cotton lawn for the lining. Then you get the feel and drape without the weight. Definitely stick with a natural fiber for breathability.

I agree something very light & breathable. I usually use a very light weight cotton.

Thanks!  So here is my next question.  How, when shopping on line, do you tell how lightweight the cottons are?  Will they be listed as a certain type cotton, like batiste, that you mentioned?  I'm obviously very new to this so I need it all spelled out for me!  Thanks again!!

Cotton voile would be another one. Also cotton gauze although I'm not sure I would buy that online because the quality can really differ. Another way to tell is by the weight although not all websites will list that. Your typical quilter's cotton weighs in around 4.5 oz. Cotton lawn is about half that. I've had good luck finding solid colors at the local fabric store. Also any place that sells heirloom baby fabrics or reenactment/costume fabrics.
