Singer 15-91

Thank you for the needle page it is very informative.  I lived in PA for two years and became a quilter.  At that time I bought a Bernina because that was what was recommended.  I still have my Bernina and still quilt here and there.  I'm hoping that my purchase of the 15-91 will inspire me to learn how to sew clothes and little things.  It sounds like this machine is really easy and fun to use.
For the thread I just use what is recommended for fabrics correct?  Do you find any thread that works really well with this machine?

I know I have a lot of questions and "thank  you" for your time in answering them.  I'll have to ask my sewing shop if they have any other owners that they know of in the area with the same machine who are actively using them.   

I use the same thread that I've always used since I started sewing- Gutermann. I've tried Coats & Clark, but it seems like I always get tension problems when I use that thread.  I've heard their newer thread spools are better and people seem to like it now, but I haven't tried it yet.
I've used Mettler here and there without problems, but can't afford to buy it all the time.
You'll love your machine. I just got a zigzag attachment for mine and was afraid to use it because I heard they don't work well, but I was pleasantly surprised. I made this outfit last night and had no problems with the applique on a thin t-shirt:

Wow you did a great job on that cute outfit.  I need to learn how to make my daughter some dresses.  I need to take a basic sewing class.  The last sewing class I took was in 7th grade and I hated it, and got an F or D in that class.  But I would love to start making  myself some simple A-line dresses.  How hard could that be...

I just got my machine back today and tested it out for the first time.  Getting the bobbin threaded is fun. There is something very charming about the simplicity of this machine.  I'm fooling around with trying to acquire a straight stitch on this machine. When I first started sewing the material was puckering a little around the stitch.  So I adjusted the settings and I'm on 3 for the needle tension, the pressor foot is pretty light, and I decreased tension on the actual bobbin.  Any recommendations out there for a straighter stitch?  Does it depend on what thread you are using?
 

I would not mess too much with the bobbin tension.  I find that for most fabrics, I keep my tension around 4-5. The heavier the fabric or thicker the thread, I will tighten the tension sometimes all the way up to 8 to achieve a neat stitch.
If this doesn't work, try a different thread and/or fabric. I find that the only time I have to adjust the tension is when I'm sewing with very thick or multiple layers(5+) of fabrics. And even then, I do not have to adjust the bobbin tension- only the needle tension will need adjustment.
