Bias binder?

    Bias binder?
    on: August 18, 2009, 11:26:34 AM
I love the look of and ease of bias tape, but I really like it when I make it myself from coordinating fabric.

I've seen a ton of different bias tape makers - but has anyone tried a binder? It attaches to the machine and has a funnel and guide. It is suppose to make sewing on the tape super simple and flawless.

    There's a pic on my blog ....

    Thoughts?

I bought one of those attachments.  Frankly, I don't use it anymore. It took too much fiddling to be worth all the bother.  There's a great tutorial at angry chicken on sewing bias.  http://angrychicken.typepad.com/angry_chicken/2008/03/bias-tape-tutor.html.  Follow these instructions and the bias will go on a lot quicker than those bias tape attachments.

I rarely buy pre-made bias anymore either.  I usually make my own continuous bias and though I own bias tape makers too, I most often attach bias with the double fold method.

I have one that I inherited with one of my machines. I played around with it but frankly I prefer the two part application. It might take a little longer but I feel like I have better control. Maybe I didn't work with the attachment enough.

I do have an attachment, but I've never been able to get it to work right.  It  only seems to like one width of tape for one, and it's the width I never use.  Would that I had known that before I bought it.

I have a bunch of tape makers too, but I've been using this method for about 7 months: Cut a strip of bias in whatever width you choose.  Fold it in half and press.  Measure the width of the folded bias.  Apply to your project, using 1/3 the width as your seam allowance (e.g. if you had 1 1/2" strip, folded it would be 3/4", so you'd sew it on at 1/4" seam allowance).  Press the seam towards the folded end of the strip, trim it if it seems bulky.  Fold over the strip, covering the stitching.  Using the same seam allowance you just did, stitch again from the right side "in the ditch."  This works really well, and you don't have to worry about raw ends of the tape peeking out after you've sewn everything which has always been my issue with bias tape.
