Need quilt pattern recommendation

    Need quilt pattern recommendation
    on: May 05, 2008, 11:23:57 AM
    Hi everyone!

I am looking for a quilt pattern to use these fabrics in:
    http://kristenunraveled.blogspot.com/2008/04/i-had-been-thinking-lot-about-quilt.html

The quilt will be for a baby, but I tend to like more modern quilts.  The problem is that most of the "modern" quilt patterns are meant to be used with solid or solid-like fabrics.  Anyone have a good pattern to use with these prints?

Thanks in advance for any suggestions!

I recently made a quilt using the Yellow Brick Road pattern (you can find it on Amazon.com if you aren't familiar with it). It's a cute, and VERY easy pattern. It calls for 12 fat quarter-sized fabrics, but you can either use duplicates of the 8 you have or add 4 more matching or solids to it. I used all B&W patterns in my quilt and I love it..... if I ever get it done, I'll post a photo.

Good luck! I love the fabric and can't wait to see what you decide.

Wow! Those fabrics are beautiful. Anything you make with them will be wonderful. I like the stacked coin idea, but I'm very much a beginner when it comes to quilting so perhaps you shouldn't take too much notice of me!

First of all, that fabric is amazing!

I think I would be inclined to use a really simple pattern without too many angles and with pieces large enough to really show off the fabric.  Since most of those prints have a very definite "top" and "bottom," I would probably try to keep each square of each print oriented the same way (i.e. everything faces "up").  Maybe a simple squares in square pattern?  I feel kind of silly using something of my own an an example, but maybe something like this: http://www.flickr.com/photos/ohfransson/1566514126/in/set-72157600808807917/

          Just my two cents! Smiley

That quilt is gorgeous, Elizabeth. I agree - it would look great done with Kirbylou's fabrics.

And your giraffe quilt (WOW!). I had to add it to my favourites for inspiration in the far off distant future when I can quilt a lot better than I can now!

I love that idea Elizabeth!  I have ordered a bunch of coordinating kona solids, so I could use those around the squares.  I like how "square" yours are... There are so many denyse schmidt style wonky squares out there now, its refreshing to see some perfectly square squares!  I love your blog btw!

I also agree with Elizabeth!  That design is simple and showcases the fabrics wonderfully... in fact,  I did something similar here:

I have often found myself thinking the same thing about how I prefer modern quilts and you often see them with mostly solids.  However, I've made a few quilts now (all on my flickr page) and I'm so drawn to patterned fabrics that they are pattern FILLED!  I think that it is very possible to make a bold modern quilt with lots of patterned fabrics.  And I LOVE the fabrics you are going to use!  Can't wait to see what you make!!

                  Thanks, everyone!

Alissa, your quilts are beautiful.  I'm also a big fan of pattern and am in the process of master-planning a "paintbox" quilt that will, ideally, use hundreds of prints grouped by color.  Your pink quilt made me smile because one of my test blocks used fussy cut pieces of that same pink Alexander Henry birdseed print.

Well, I don't have a direct link, but Amy Butler's decorative patchwork throw fom In Stitches is lovely, and all square or rectangular in shape.  And she uses patterned fabric.  It's so lovely, I think it would be too adorable with that fabulous fabric you have.  Those penguins are to die for!!!

Anywho, just go to Amazon.com, look up her book, and then Serch Inside in the exerpt.  You'll even get the pattern and the instructions right there!  Can't get better than that.  Smiley
