Viking Husqvarna 6020

    Viking Husqvarna 6020
    on: August 24, 2009, 02:46:10 PM
I inherited an old Viking machine (model 6020) from my grandmother recently. It's motor belt has broken and the local sewing repair shop said it'd be about $90 to replace and then clean out/tune the machine. Is this worth it? Should I take the trade-in value and get a new machine? Are parts still available for this old machine? Thanks.

What kind of trade in value are they offering and which machine would you be looking at?

I'm a lover of old machines so I say keep it!  $90 for a repair and service doesn't sound like much at all.  (I paid $120 just to service my new Janome last year.) For a new (decent) machine, it would cost at least triple the repair fee with the trade-in value contributing little to the cost.
I say keep the Viking and fix her up.  I bet you won't regret it.

I agree with Irene, it is totally worth it to fix the Viking in decent condition. I have a 6010 and it is wonderful. Contact me via my private email and I will share some additional info about the Viking machine.

Do not trade the machine. $90.00 is a great price for the repair/service.

I have this model myself, it is a GORGEOUS machine, runs so quiet yet is so powerful. It is also one of the only machines with a true low-gear (pull out the bobbinwider thingy to engage it) that maintains the full power of the motor, allowing you to sew very thick materials like multiple layers of denim, or even leather.  I vote DEFINITLEY fix and keep.

Something to note about this particular model is that the buttonhole cams can need replacing. I had to do that at one time and gladly paid around $120 for it.  You would not be able to get a new mechanical machine as good for five times this price.

Did your grandmother still have the original manual?  If you need one I can send you a scan.

Thanks for all your help and advice! I'm going to keep it, look for parts on ebay, and take it into the repair place as my reward after I pass my Master's exam in a few weeks.

                Emily Kate,
I also recently inherited a Viking Huskavarna 6020.  I can do the basics, but I would love it if you could scan me a copy of the manual.  You would really help me out.

                Thank you,
                Eileen
