I'm relatively new to sewing.  I've been sewing about 2 years, and usually make basic clothes for my daughter.  I'd like to start embellishing with appliques.  I have a very basic machine, a Bernina Bernette.  It doesn't do anything fancy, no embroidery or any software.  So I really have no idea how you do appliques.  I mean, I of course, know the general idea, but where do you find the patterns to cut out for the applique?  Do I attach it by hand or can I use the machine?  If I use the machine, what kind of stitch do I use? I'd appreciate any tips or help.  Thanks!!

I just read over the tutorial and it was very helpful.  But does anyone know where you find these appliques to use??  I didn't see much reference made as to where to get the appliques, if you don't have the special software.  Thanks!

You can draw your own shapes or print out free clip art from the internet. Coloring book shapes are also usually easy to do if you don't draw. I often use google images to find things!

I've collected applique shapes around the internet and in my clipart, and keep them in a file folder so when I need one, I just leaf through there.  I've made quite a few bibs with raw edge applique (the easiest kind!)  They are on my flickr pages.

Just a few I've made.  Smiley

I draw my own, or if you know what you want to do, but are having a hard time getting some creative juices, look through a coloring book!!  There are great basic ideas in coloring books.  Or, google "fire truck color page" o "ice cream cone color page" etc and you will likely get some good ideas.  Print it out, enlarge it if you need to, trace it and there you have it!  I think its fun to embellish things as well - i.e. if you're doing a cupcake, use a button as a cherry on top.
