Leftovers / Scraps
on: September 01, 2009, 06:47:50 AM
Hi,
When I'm done with a project (or if I've abandoned one), I don't really want the fabric / scraps. Any ideas about what should I do with them? I know that sounds silly, but I really don't know how to find a scrappy quilter who might want them.

Thanks for the suggestions caitlinsmom!
What I was trying to ask was -- who wants this stuff because I want it out of my tiny space.
Maybe something like a group that sew quilts for charities -- know of any that accept fabric?
TIA

I know some people give it away to whoever wants it on thier blogs. Like a contest. I don't know of any charity that takes it but you could check your local churches. A church by me takes it & makes blankets & teddy bears for kids in the hospital.

Check with the schools. The art teacher or the home ec (I know it has a different name now, but I can't remember what it is) would love to have it. The lower grades also use fabric scraps for projects.

Also check with children's museums, the YMCA, or other facility that has children's programs.
Another idea is to contact a quilt guild in your area and ask them. Members may like to use them for making charity quilts and such.

How about looking for someone who runs a Quilt Guild in your area? I know I've been asked by other crafters what I do with MY scraps, coz they'd like to have some. I've also given some to after school programs at schools, or you could also ask your local fabric store if they know anyone who'd like them. I usually give mine to an acquaintance who quilts.

Also check with local sewing classes. Our church is looking for fabric donations for a sewing class for kids.

You could also check out craftleftovers.com
Also, local schools will sometimes take them for a mini home ec type of class or activity.

I've seen people selling bags of scraps on Etsy for the cost of the listing +shipping and handling.

I would look at asg.org (american sewing guild) and see if there are any local chapters around you. I am sure they would gladly take your scraps.
