Amy Butler Birdie Sling Mess Up - any suggestions?

Amy Butler Birdie Sling Mess Up - any suggestions?
    on: September 12, 2009, 08:23:01 AM
Hi there!  I have been reading messages for a while here and am a very new sewer.  I have been working on the Birdie sling (off and on being very careful!) for a few weeks now and finally did the almost last step last night and braved flipping the darn thing inside out to right side to view the finished product.  It looks so cool.  EXCEPT - the raw edge at the top band is just barely caught. I can see it and a bit of the interfacing at the top of band where it meets the lining.  So, an important spot.  I have thought of all sorts of things but wanted to know what someone more experienced might do.  My best thought I think is to do some kind of applique button or something over it to hide it.  Any ideas my fellow mamas?

    Thanks for reading,
    Deirdre

Unfortunately, if the top band is barely catching the lining, this seam may continue to rip out as you use it.  The best possible solution is to turn the bag wrong side out again, find the seam that is barely caught and sew another seam maybe 1/4" inside of your original one.  This should catch the raw edges and reinforce the seam to keep it from tearing out.

I agree with Irene.  Take the extra time to turn it back out and sew a new seam.  You might even pin it to see where the seam would go, turn it & see if it works or if further tweaking may be necessary.  I haven't made this bag but I wouldn't leave it as such.  It just won't last which would be a shame given all the time you put into it.  Good luck.

thank you.  I am waiting until next weekend when I have time again to sew to fix the seam.  Thanks so much for your help!

My late aunt Dorothy told me (when I was twelve), "Here is a seam ripper. It will be your best friend. And, your worst enemy."

I'd rip out the portion of the seam where it's exposed and re-stitch it.

If that's the only trouble you're having for a beginning sewing project, you're HOT! Have fun with it!
