Help with ruffled quilt binding

    Help with ruffled quilt binding
    on: September 17, 2009, 02:17:06 PM
Can anyone point me to a tutorial on applying a ruffled edge to a quilt??

I'm trying to finish a Heather Bailey Freshcut Quilt but she gives no info on how to put the ruffle on!

I've never binded a quilt either, so is it too ambitious??
I'd like to try but I need detailed instructions.

I did find a post here but I didn't understand the instructions.

The easiest way to add a ruffled binding is to sew quilt top and backing right sides together with the ruffle sandwiched between the top and backing.  You need to leave a small opening to turn the quilt right-side out.  Then, a simple topstitch can be use to close the opening and finish the quilt.  In these types of quilts, they cannot be quilted together due to the quilt needing to be turned. You could add simple ties to keep the layers together.

Heather Bailey's Freshcut quilt looks to be a different method because the instructions include quilting the layers together before the ruffle layers are added.  Here's a link that may help: http://www.mccallsquilting.com/articles/prairie_points_edging.
It's for a prairie point edge, but adding a ruffle would be accomplished the same way.
      Here's how I think it's done:
      - Quilt your layers together, but leave the outer 1" edge of your quilt free from any quilting.
      - Trim all layers even with quilt top.
      - Fold only your quilt top right-sides together towards the center of quilt and pin.
      - With right sides together, sew ruffle on top of quilt back and batting.
      - Iron ruffle up away from backing and press seam allowance down towards inside of quilt.
      - Remove pins from your quilt top and unfold. Now fold the quilt top under 1/4" all the way around to hide raw edge. Press.
      - Top stitch all around the quilt sewing through all layers. You could use a decorative stitch here to add more detail.
      Hope this helps.  Good luck!

        Thanks for the info.

        That makes sense.

Will my feed dogs eat up the batting when Im sewing the ruffle to the back of quilt?

I would test a strip of batting to be sure, but most machines shouldn't have any trouble with batting. I guess it depends on the type you are using.
If your machine ends up eating the batting in your test, then I would pin it away with your quilt front.  I don't think it would make a big difference either way.

OK...i have done a quilt WITH QUILTING and a ruffle edge...

what i did was to do the quilt as per instructions, quilted the quilt up until 2-3 inches away from border edge...then i made my ruffle (and this will take a lot of fabric and time and it gets heavy!)

then i pinned my ruffle between the quilt top and back and i use glue to help baste it before i top stitched it all together. then i did a little more quilting as i saw big open areas and did a decorative stitch on the edging to further reinforce the seam on the ruffle.

it can be done and will take a lot of trial and error on your part if you haven't done binding before but totally doable. that freshcut quilt is gorgeous!

can you explain a little more how you did it??? did you just make your ruffle with your serger and then connected it to your quilt?

Yes, my serger has a ruffle foot, I have  Brother Baby Lock & found that the instructions here: http://sewsensible.blogspot.com/2008/01/making-ruffles.html worked better than the instructions on the DVD.

I have not yet sewn the ruffle onto the quilt yet, as I have yet to quilt it. I always run into a snag. Ive never quilted anything other than a doorstop so I was trying to decide on method. I decided on diagonal lines but now Im missing my spacer attachment on my machine.

Anyway, my serger can also ruffle & attach to another piece of fabric but I didn't want to try that especially with batting on quilt.

I think that is such a pretty quilt. I can't wait to see yours. I love ruffles.

                      Thanks for your help!

I finally finished. I love it though its certainly not perfect.
The glory about a quilt its easy not to notice all the imperfections!

Any tips for turning the corners w/the ruffle?
