Any tips on serging/overlocking curves?

    Any tips on serging/overlocking curves?
    on: August 11, 2008, 09:59:25 PM
I have just been given a serger/overlocker by my parents. They bought me the Bernina 1150MDA. It's really easy to drive and works well.

But I have just discovered the frustration of trying to do curves. The sharper the curve, the worse it is. Unfortunately there are very few things which don't have some curves. I can't make nothing but facewashers and hankies.

Does anyone have any words of wisdom?

I suspect I will hear "practice, practice, practice", and maybe that's what I need to hear, but I would rather hear of some magic technique that will have me serging curves confidently inside of half an hour.  Grin

I find that I end up having to stretch the curves straight as I sew them.  I know this is one of those things that everyone says is a no no, but it is really the only way to get it done.   Wink  And, practice, practice, practice  Grin

          Been wondering the same thing...
I would love to be able to surge more things but I'm scared to try anything with curves!

Curves can be easy after you "practice, practice, practie"
Inside curves- Serge along the edge until yuo start to enter the curve. Then simply straighten the curve of the fabric while you continue to sew. (try not to stretch it) As the fabric approaches the foot move the curve toward the left.
Outside curve- watch the needles not the knife ( practice on a scrap peice, you may need to lower your knife) if it is a tight curve stop every couple of stitches  and shift the fabric  much like you would with a sewing machine and a tight corner.
take it slowly and  Practice on a scrap!
Good books are "Serger Secrets" and "easy guide to Serging fine fabrics"
            Hope that helps

I actually just did a tutorial on my blog about making diapers and happen to have a tip with photos about serging curves.  It's quick and dirty but it definitely works, especially on tight outside curves.  If you're serging a curve on the inside, just clip a couple of points to allow the fabric to have a little "give" (1/4" or less so that you serge over the clip) and pull it straight like you've been doing.  You don't want to clip too many points because then it will make the curve bigger.  Go slowly and it should work like a charm.

Here is the link for outside curves--it's pretty close to the beginning in the serging instructions.

I know this topic is REALLY old, but this is what I've been having issues with for some time now. I just found some videos on you tube that are a little helpful, but if anyone has come across any other tips they's be helpful!
Specifically as I'm trying to serge/overlock curves for cloth nappy/diaper boosters and inserts as well as cloth pads.

                  Thanks!
