Halloween costume pattern?
on: August 11, 2008, 10:06:41 PM
I'm searching for a cute (and not too difficult) Halloween costume that I can sew for my 4-year-old son. He loves Mickey Mouse, but my internet searches are coming up dry. Since I'm determined to make his costume myself, we'll probably have to abandon Mickey and choose something different. Anyone have a pattern recommendation for a little boy's costume? TIA! Lisa

You might still be able to do Mickey. You could make a pair of red pants and then sew on two big white buttons (if you can find some) or applique two white circles on the front. SMS had a great applique tutorial last month if you've never done it before. For the top, your son would just need a long-sleeve black top. For the gloves, you could buy a pair of white gloves and sew on the black lines (or even draw them on with fabric paint). For ears, how about making a black fleece hat and sewing the ears into the seams? I made a cat-ear hat like this for our preschool dress-up box and it turned out really well! The yellow shoes might be a little more difficult, you might need to experiment a bit, but I am thinking you could cut out two shoe-shaped pieces from yellow fabric and sew the two sides. Make a casing on the top for elastic to fit around your son's ankle. You would leave the bottom open to fit over his shoes. (I know most store-bought costumes with feet have something similar). Good luck! Not sure if all that made sense or not, it's really easy to see things in your head, harder to explain them! Please ask if you have questions.

Thanks, Andi. That made perfect sense. I'm going to give it a try. The only thing I'm a little worried about are the shoes. If I can't get the slip-overs to work, I may just spray-paint his old crocs yellow since he's about outgrown them anyway.
When you made the cat-ear hat, did you follow a pattern? I'm not exactly sure how to do this.

I did have a pattern for a child's fleece hat and then simply cut out some ear shapes, pinned them into the seams (facing inward), and sewed as normal. When I turned the hat right-side out, the ears were there. Hope that helps!

That helps immensely. I should be able to find a fleece hat pattern and do the same thing.
I made the pants last night and paired it with a black shirt. It's coming together.

The spray-painted crocs are a great idea!
