finished smock pics and overall dimensions?
    on: May 05, 2008, 04:59:04 PM
Hi Bitter Betty and everyone at SMS!

I cant wait to get started on the sew-along and was hoping that perhaps there were some photos of "finished smocks" to look at more closely to get some ideas of construction and fit and to help with fabric selection?

Also, i am 5'10" so i am fairly certain i will be lengthening the smock. Should i lengthen the pocket piece as well? Do you have overall finished measurements? Like 28" long, etc.... It would help me in determining if i really need to lengthen it or not Smiley

    Thank you!

Okay... The smock is 42 inches around at the chest.. The total length shoulder to hem is 26.5 inches. At the waist it is 39 inches because of the darts. I am 5'6" and the smock hits me right at the top of my pants inseam.  I am wearing it in the picture and the video, But can take a couple more pictures tomorrow. ( ;Dgetting dark here..)
Construction is  basically that the apron strings are inserted in the darts which are quite deep. The xxxx's on the pattern show apron string placement The pocket is sewn on the front panel before the sides are seamed up. The pocket is top stitched right under the darts to make the three compartments. The back panels are hemmed with a 1/4 in rolled hem and the bias tape goes around the arm holes and up the back opening around the neck and down the other side. The smock is help closed with a single button at the neck in back, and the apron ties.

I will post some more pics tomorrow of the vintage smock all laid out.
And I will try and put some perfunctory written instructions together too... Smiley

      Thanks for your question Amy!

You may also want to consider moving the darts.  I made a muslin today, and I had to move the darts 4 inches down in order to get the ties at my waist (I am 5'9").  I may also add a few inches to the bottom, I am not sure yet.

            Hi, everyone
I'm new to the site, but I happened along and found Betty's tutuorial for the smock a few weeks ago and I made mine in almost one night,, which is quite an undertaking for someone who don't usually sew anything but some basic stuff.  I didn't want to buy material just to practice so I used a sheet that was never used.  I made some mistakes but overall was very pleased.  I will try to post a picture later.  Thanks Betty .
