Any Pettiskirt Tips?

An easier way to gather chiffon or tulle is to us a very wide, long zigzag stitch and dental floss. Center the floss so that it is under your zigzag stitch, leaving several inches beyond the edge of your fabric on either end (so you can pull them to gather), zigzag stitch over the floss trapping it underneath the stitching. Pull fabric over floss to gather, and secure ends of floss by putting a pin at the end of the fabric/floss/zigzag and twisting the floss in a figure 8 to hold it in place. Do this on both ends and pin to waistband or whatever your ruffle is going on and sew, ruffle side up to secure. This techinuque saved my wedding. My aunt showed up the night before my wedding and sewed the "ruffle" on my "mermaid" style gown. I had bitten off more than I could chew and had it not been for her, I would have had a knee length wedding gown!!

Good Luck! There isn't anyone who sells it retail. I have wholesaler that sells it in chocolate brown but only in 750 yard rolls! Shocked It's the same manufacturer who supplies Belle Ami, Oopsie Daisey Baby and Kaiya Eve. I have tried to get AFC- Express to carry brown but with no luck (yet)! Basically if you want one in brown, you are going to have to pay full retail! Sorry I don't have better news. If anyone else knows different, please let me know because I have exhausted my contacts...

              Hi All
Well I just bought 70 yards of Nylon chiffon and 8 yards of satin.
AFC-express had free shipping on orders over $100 so I spent $155 to save the shipping Roll Eyes
I have a ruffler foot, straight stitch sewing machine, and a serger.
I love to sew Smiley I mostly repair my wife and kids cloths, make alterations, and curtains.
As an engineer I love the idea of taking a 2 dimensional material and making a 3 dimensional finished product.
I have 2 boy and 1 princess (Gigi)
Gigi is 3 and I have fallen in love with buying beautiful clothes for her.
I spend hours on ebay looking for deals on couture dresses.
Luckily for me the boy are happy with a new video game or 2 a month so they don’t feel too slighted on the money spent on Gigi. I have the boys and I believing that after Gigi grows out of her dresses I will ebay them back out. As they were mostly bought on ebay I think I will be able to get 60 to 80% of what I paid back.

I was looking for a used Kaiya Eve on ebay and found them going for more than a new knockoff  Shocked. I saw the Martha Stewart piece on the internet and that stared my research.

My goal in my hobby of buy clothes for Gigi and in some cases my wife is to get the outfit for 25% or less of retail.
My logic is that Gigi can wear a $100 silk dress as every day wear if I only paid $25 for it. Grin
In order to lessen the wear and tear on these expensive cloths she has lots (she has the largest closet in the house and it is overflowing).
Besides it is fun shopping for the cloths and seeing my daughter looking beautiful.

              Wish me luck Cheesy
              Thanks for all the info.
If I can’t pull it off some one going to get a deal on a pile of chiffon LOL Roll Eyes

Good Luck with it! Sounds like you daughter is one lucky gal! Grin

Let me know if you need to unload that chiffon, I would be glad to have it, although I think you will be able to make plenty of pretty pettis for your little Gigi.

                  Thanks  Smiley
I was thinking about how I was going build the petti most of the night
                  Questions like
                  Bottom up or top down?
Should I use the ruffler foot to just make the ruffle fluff or make and attach the ruffle fluff in one step?
The 3 layers of chiffon  that make up one side of tear 2 should I shir or can I use the ruffle foot?
I can't see how to feed 3 layers of chiffon thought the ruffle foot at one time. My wife said the chiffon is very thin and would probable feed though .
Can the 2 layers of chiffon on tear 3 be attached to tear 2 with the ruffle foot?
I have to say my work (that engineering stuff they pay me to do) has been out of my mind for the last 24 hours Grin
I am going to have to go into work today to finish up a project  Sad
I have no hobbies  Roll Eyes
I am looking forward to having one Smiley

                  Thanks for your help

I build my skirts bottom up- I think it's easier, but that's just me! I also prefer to do the ruffle fluff and then attach it after it's gathered. I've done it both ways and I think that way is easier for me and quicker too! I gather and attach my tiers at the same time by running both layers through the ruffler, but I also hand gather sometimes too! Just depends on my mood and how much time I have.

                      Thank you so much Smiley
Now that I know I can attach the tiers both way, I will try them both.
I can't wait to try it.
My wife wants me to make her one
                      Mommy daughter skirts.
They should should turn a few heads at Disney this summer.
I am thinking the matched pettis should be red with hot pink ruffle fluff.

                      Thanks again Mike

I love to make one for my 4 yr old too, did I misread anything here, how many yards of fabric do we need, for a girl with 20" waist and 15" length for the skirt?

Has anyone made a top to match with the skirts? I'd love to see the pictures.

                        Thank you.

                          Hi Pompoms
As far as I know it is going to take 5-6 yards chiffon
                          1/4 yard of satin

Men have a hard time doing anything in moderation
If 6 yards is plenty, than 70 yards in 9 colors should keep me busy for a while Grin
                          Hope that helps
