Babylock Protege Serger

    Babylock Protege Serger
    on: October 13, 2009, 08:13:10 PM
Does anyone know anything about this serger?  I found one for a good price on Craigslist.  I don't need anything too fancy but I do want something reliable and easy to use.  I've heard good things about Babylock, but don't know about this specific model.

I have seen a review regarding this serger a year ago when I was looking at this same Protege model. I know that many people love the higher priced Imagine and Evolve BL sergers, but I also noticed a review of this lower end model.  From what I remember, it is a good basic machine once you figure out how to thread it- just like all sergers in my opinion. I know that the reviewer highly recommended this serger.
If you can, try to take a close look at it and see if you can get the owner to thread it so that you can test it out on several different kinds of fabrics, ie- knit, cotton and satin.

On the whole, Babylock are considered the best in sergers.

They usually have the air feed for threading (woo-hoo) and are very reliable.

Most brands are very good: Husqvarna, Brother, Singer etc.

With sergers (overlockers) in general, you get what you pay for.

I own five sergers, ranging from and inherited 1970's number to a brand new Husqvarna, and I have worked in schools with many different brands.  My advice is to test drive as many as you can.  They are all temperamental and you have to get to know your machine to get the best from it.  All of them can be very trying when it comes to re threading them from scratch.

I could not survive without an overlocker and I use mine every day.

I have a babylock imagine and I think (with bias of course!) that they (babylock) are the best sergers around.  The air  threading is worth it--I switch thread arrangements so often because it is no hassle.

If it is reasonably priced I would go for it!
