Any ideas for a hospital handy bag

Any ideas for a hospital handy bag
    on: August 14, 2008, 11:02:45 PM
I'm want to make a bag to hang on the side of a hospital bed to keep items a patient might need handy, such as hair brush, lotion, lip gloss, nail file, etc..  Any ideas?  I checked out Beth's Knitting Needle Roll, and I'm thinking a similar but larger pocket structure will work well.  My concerns are slipping off the side of the rail, and is Velcro the best attachment and should it be on ribbon or the whole upper edge of the bag?  Help, please.

I really can't answer your questions, but here was my first thought minus the two lower straps... http://www.laurassewingstudio.com/Sewing/Walker_Bag/walker_bag.html.  I remember when I had my daughter and spent five days in the hospital that everything was either out of reach or all over my tray and in the way at meal times.  Something you could attach to the bed rail sounds like a good idea.

I've noticed rails vary from place to place, so velcro would be the best way to secure a bag to make it adjustable. Also, keep in mind that as the head of the bed is raised, the rail is at an angle. so any way that the bag wouldn't slip down to far would be helpful. (My son was checked out for appendicitis last night, so I had a loooong time to consider the bed rail!)

Jennifer,  Your handy walker bag was great!  Thanks for the tutorial.  On my NEXT bag, I will make the pockets on both sides.  I was able to put all the items I'd hoped in a bag for my cousin, nail clippers, file, polish, notes, pens, dental floss, hairbrush, lotion, instant hand soap, etc.  BUT as it was my first attempt and before I saw your great suggestions, the three sections of pocket made the bag much longer than it should have been.

Dear mrsp, I pray your son has recovered well from his surgery.  I solved the slippage by sewing the mesh rubber shelving liner onto the insides of the straps and attached them with Velcro long ways so they would have some adjustability.

I think the bag would be great if it is transferable from bed to wheelchair to walker.  I wished I'd taken a photo, the hospital has asked if I could sew some for their gift shop!  In my spare time.   Cheesy

Chiming in late here, but I think that some sort of webbed strap and a buckle would also work for attaching the bag to the hospital bed and would make it very secure. I'm going to file this idea away - wish I had something like it when I was in the hospital having my kids!
