Would this work?

Hi, this is my first post here although I have been reading and learning from the forums for a while.

I want to make curtains for my daughter's room.  I've done this before - very simple and not taxing at all.

I have fallen for the perfect fabric that matches her bedding perfectly.  It is 45in decorator fabric and I needed enough to do a width and a half for each side of th window to allow for fullness.

Sadly, the fabric store didn't have enough for 3 lengths on the bolt. 

I am considering buying two lengths of the 45in fabric, and buying one length of a co-ordinating fabric and splitting it in half to attach as a border on each curtain panel.

Each panel would then have two thirds pattern fabric with one third contrasting plain fabric meeting in the center when the curtains are closed.

Does this make sense?

If so - do you think it would work or would it look awful?

If you can, try hanging it up to try and see what it would look like completed. If it doesn't look right, you could also pick a solid color then add a thick band of your printed fabric along the bottom of the curtain. I've done this many times and it turns out great.

Personally, I think that's a good fix.  I had to something like that with curtains in my daughter's room in our last apartment. I added some matching gingham to each edge to give myself enough width.  It looked great!

  try a contrasting printed fabric too, usually all the designer fabrics have contrasting fabric in the same colorway or design. gingham or polkadots work verywell as borders along the side for pastels. if you can, try hanging them together at the store to see how they would look.

if the curtains are not floor length, you could add the band of contrast fabric to the top portion of the curtain to create a valanace-like feel and sew the designer fabric as the bottom (main) portion.
