Kids fiction books and music featuring sewing

Kids fiction books and music featuring sewing

    Dear all,
I'm looking for your recommendations on *fiction* books for kids which feature sewing in some manner, such as the Tailor of Gloucester, or Halibut Jackson. I'm particularly interested in suggestions of picture books, but books for older kids would also be good to know about.

Just to be clear, I'm *not* after non-fiction how-to type books, but rather stories which you love about sewing.

Likewise, if you know any good songs feature sewing (such as the wonderful Sewing Maching Song by TR Kelley - google it if you don't know it - a glorious ballad about the life of a singer sewing maching), I'd be thrilled to learn about them.

    Thanks in anticipation,
    Zoe

When I was a kindergarten/preschool teacher I always used to make quilts with my classes and loved to have a variety of quilt-realted fiction to get my students excited about the project.  Some of my favourites are:
Sam Johnson and the Blue Ribbon Quilt by Lisa Campbell Ernst (my Grade two students love this book too!)
The Boy and the Quilt by Shirley Kurtz
The Patchwork Quilt by Valerie Flournoy

As for books about sewing that are not quilt-related, the first one that came to my mind was:

Something From Nothing by Phoebe Gilman
(the same story was also written by Simms Taback and is titled "Joseph Had a Little Overcoat"  The story is based on a song which is included in the back of the book in Taback's version)

One on my "to-read" list is Pockets by Jennifer Armstrong

There is also Bruno the Tailor by Lars Klinting

Hope that helps!  I really enjoy reading your blog, you have so many great ideas!

        Hi Andi,

Thanks so much for these suggestions - they do look good! I've just read a very favourable review of "Pockets" at http://www.readingmylibrary.com/2009/11/beauty.html, so yes, looks like it's one to seek out.

I've sent you a message via your blog with a bit more stuff - do let me know if it doesn't arrive for some reason.

Thanks again for your great recommendations :-)
