flat piping?

    flat piping?
    on: August 21, 2008, 09:30:45 PM
Help!  I'm making a jacket for my son (favorite things hooded jacket pattern) and would like to add flat piping.  But I'm unclear as to whether I make the piping out of a remnant or if it's a notion that I should buy.  Anyone know?

    TIA,

You can do either one...make it or buy it.  If you're not familiar with how to make it, and you've never sewed piping before, I'd buy it.  If you don't have a speciality foot for trims and piping, then use your zipper foot to sew it on.

do you mean a narrow flange of folded fabric?

Cut your fabric to the width you desire, factoring the seam allowances and folding it in half, on the bias if you have curves. You really don't need to buy anything.

I feel like a real dummy...after reading more carefully through the pattern instructions, I found where it explained how to make this.  It ended up being so simple, too.

          Thanks for the help,

If you're doing flat piping, you should be able to sew it on without a special foot, since it's just folded strips.  I find it way easier to baste it to one piece of fabric first.  Then sew the two pieces together with the piping safely basted in place.
