Buying First Machine

    Buying First Machine
    on: November 24, 2009, 07:25:02 AM
I am going to buy my first sewing machine. I want it to have the following in order of importance:
    1. Reliability
    2. NOT made in China
    3. Able to sew variety of fabrics.
    4. Under $1200.
Anything out there that fits these criteria?

I finally bit the bullet and bought a Bernina 440QE. I paid well over twice what I had orginally intended, but the machine I purchased satisfied my requirements. After I learn to use it, I will post a review. Thanks for the interest and replies. (I didn't intend to diparage sewing machines made in China, I just wanted one made in US or Europe.)

you are looking for a lot of the same things I am.  Mine includes not made in Taiwan, which is making it hard.  Ruling out Singer, the Viking model I looked at today and probably more that i will find out about soon.  Looks like I will get a brother made in Japan and not owned by a third party.

My Viking Sapphire meets these requirements.  Apparently some Sapphires are made in China and some are made in Sweden.  You have to turn it over to see where the particular unit is made.

(FWIW, mine was MIC and I've never had a lick of trouble with it)

Some Brothers, at least, are made in China even though the company is Japanese. The XR9000 I got the other day is Chinese-made.

Bernina is having a HUGE sale through Jan 4th.

I do not like my Brother Innovis (made in China).  I LOVE my new Bernina 230.  What a difference!

              Good luck!

I am glad you love your Bernina 230, that is the first step to many years of fun.  Could you tell me where the lable says it is made?  And a ball park of what you paid.  I wish I was closer to a dealer.
