How many layers of Thermolam are sufficient for a potholder that really works?

1 probably is enough, but I tend to go overboard on potholders and I'd probably use 2.

Is it OK to just use cotton or cotton/poly batting and not that insulbrite stuff?  The insulbrite made a mess the last time I used it.

        Thanks!

I find that cotton batting isn't enough.  If you are holding something hot for a minute or so, it starts to feel uncomfortably hot!
I think I used 2 layers of thermolam in the past and the ones I have work well.  They are 10 years old though and just plain gross at this point.
