Stretch poplin for a bathing suit?
    on: May 06, 2008, 08:02:07 PM
I have a vintage inspired pattern for a bathing suit with shirring in the front... I don't want super stretchy shiny modern bathing suit fabric... could a stretch poplin work? I use it recently for a halter top and like it but...

I would experiment with the poplin to see how well it shirs. Otherwise, it sounds like a great idea.

I don't see why you couldn't. maybe do some testing before you sew the whole thing up. My biggest problem with sewing vintage or retro type stuff is that modern fabric can take away from the vintage look. poplin would be much closer to a real vintage look than the shiny bathing suit stuff. I'll be interested to see how it turns out sonce I am soon to be dismantling a vintage suit of mine to make a pattern from it.

The only problem I would anticipate is that the poplin won't "stick" to you as well as lycra would. There's not a whole lot of give, so it won't cover as well, if you know what I mean  Wink.
