do you put the markings on the front or the back?

do you put the markings on the front or the back?
    on: August 24, 2008, 08:01:52 PM
Hey y'all, I have another probably remedial question, if you wouldn't mind...   I've always put my little marks on the wrong side (when I say always, I mean since January when I started to sew).  But however, the dolly I'm making for my girl has interfacing on all the wrong sides, so I'm wondering if I have been doing it wrong all along and I'm supposed to mark the front?  Or do I mark over the interfacing after I, um, interface(?) it?    Undecided

Maybe this is when you use the colored thread method?  Because you're supposed to write on the back, but you can't because there's the interfacing jazz there, so you do the threads?  eek.

I totally read the pattern, too, y'all.  The whole thing.  Serious.

    thanks for your help

Where I put my markings depends on the pattern, but most often I aim to put the marks on the back, if possible. 90% of the time I sew with the right sides facing unless I'm french seaming. If I marked on the "right side" I'd never see the marks.

I also don't usually put my marks on straight away when I cut because I like to cut ahead of time and it make be weeks before I get around to sewing. I like using chalk on darks and an overnight fading purple marker on lights. I'm still getting the hang of things, so I may be doing it all wrong too!

I also mark on the wrong sides when at all possible.  You can just lay your pattern back over the piece after you have interfaced and make the markings on the interfacing.

This is one of the advantages of using a needle and thread!  Wink
