Rulers for Rotary Cutters

    Rulers for Rotary Cutters

I know rotary cutters are usually used with those plastic grid rulers but I was wondering if you can use a cork backed metal ruler?  I have one that's longer then my plastic grid so would be handy for cutting lengths of fabric, but don't know if it's OK to use.

It's alright to use and I have one myself, but I find that I often slip and end up with my rotary cutter on the metal ruler which is terrible for the blade. If possible, stay away from metal and go with wood if there's a choice.
The plastic ones are really the best because of their thickness which keeps the rotary cutter from slipping.

The grids on the plastic rulers really are invaluable too.  You can find grainlines easily, you can line things up perfectly, and you'll know if you're off even a hair.

I use both a gridded clear ruler and several metal ones. You do have to be careful with the thinner metal ones not to slip up. I use a metal T-square that is a lot thicker than the cork-backed type and I have no problems at all with that.

I have to be careful not to cut into the plastic one.
