Anyone made the Folklore Bag from One-Yard Wonders?

Anyone made the Folklore Bag from One-Yard Wonders?
    on: January 03, 2010, 09:31:33 PM
I'm having a problem with the lining...

Rather than making the same pieces for the inside and outside, one pattern piece is different (bag front/back).  The outside has pleats, while the inside is smooth.

My top band fits the outside perfectly, but is significantly larger than the lining (more than can be taken up in a simple seam).  Did I do something wrong?  Are the pattern measurements off?  I did notice that the writing on the pattern piece is upside down (the bottom of the bag is rounded, but the writing makes the rounded part look like the top... weird).

Basically I wondered if anyone else has had this problem, and if so how did you fix it?  If not, can you suggest where I went wrong?

    Thanks!

Well, I am glad I saw this!  I just got the book this weekend and was going to start the bag this week.  I will let you know once I start!

So I was comparing the pattern pieces...

The lining pattern piece is about 1 inch smaller across the top than the outer pieces (even after taking up the pleats!).

Again, unless I am missing something, this will be a problem when attaching the top band (which is identical for the inside and outside of the bag).

Next time I make this bag, I will just use the outer piece to make the lining as well (and then pleat the lining too).  I think the lining is a little off in the rest of the measurements too, as the bottom/side piece came out just a hair short for it.

P.S.  Both the lining and outer pieces are labeled upside down, so this apparently is not important (just weird Tongue).

You know...I just finished mine.  It turned out fine, and the lining fit perfectly.  Maybe you used the wrong seam allowance?  I will post it later today on my blog: http://fashionedbymeg.blogspot.com

I made it before Christmas and did have a little trouble fitting these together.  I had maybe an extra 1/4 inch or so?   I did struggle mightily attaching the top and bottom external pieces, so I ended up hiding the ugly seam with some ribbon.  I did not blog the process, but here is a finished pic of mine...

Here is mine.  I did attach the top piece differently than she had you do it.  I attached it with a 1/2" seam right sides together like you normally would rather than folding it under and top stitching it on.

That's how I plan to put future versions together.  In reading how the book tells you how to assemble the pattern, I thought it would save time, but it was cumbersome and odd.  As to my original question, I wonder if some of the patterns were printed differently (I have that special BN edition with 5 extra products)...  When I pinned the exterior front/back pattern to take out the excess fabric for the pleats, it measures nearly a half inch larger than the lining front/back.  So it wasn't a cutting or seam allowance issue.  It's just odd that some don't seem to have this problem.

I saw there are some clarifications to the bag on the publishers site.

I finished making this today and had the same problem with the top bands. I had to shorten the lining top band considerably so that it fit the lining, and then had to put an ugly pleat in the exterior band because it was a lot bigger than the lining band. It's nice to know it's not just me!

I was a bit confused by the photo of the bag as well - the side / bottom appears to be made from two pieces rather than one. I will make it again because I like it, it's just a shame I used some nice fabric on my first attempt...

I didn't have any problem putting the bag together, but did anyone have a problem with having enough yardage?  I may have missed something, but I had to purchase extra fabric to cut out the top band lining piece.  It wasn't a big deal because I used a nice black print, and I used black fabric for the inside top band lining.

I also used interfacing for the handles to provide further stability, serged the long ends, turned it right side out, and then topstitched it.  I definitely like it better.

I plan to make more, but I would make one change.  Rather than topstitch the bottom end of the top band after attaching it to the bottom portion of the bag, I would wait to topstitch it along with the very last step of topstitching the top edge of the bag.  I think it would prevent the bag lining from pulling out from the outer bag whenever you separate the magnetic closures.

I wish I could post a picture of it, but I can't seem to insert an image. D'oh.
