Dress for a 9 year old.

I am looking for a dress pattern for a nine year old girl.  I can't seem to find anything that kinda modern.  Help!

You're right, it is hard.  How about a tunic/dress like http://www.mccallpattern.com/item/M5919.htm?tab=girls_boys_7_16_girls_plus&page=1
I have also bought a more summery(?) pattern recently from New Look. http://www.sewingpatterns.com/subpage.php?brand=New%20Look (pattern 6195)it only goes to size 8 but you'll have to check measurements.  I find the big pattern companies to fit large.

Here's a new one we have in the shop:

Keep in mind that sometimes all you need to do to bring a pattern up to date is the fabric. The color, print and fiber content of the fabric makes all the difference when sewing a pattern. I hardly ever look at the pattern photos, but instead look at the back of the envelope. There you will see just the black & white sketch of the pattern which makes it easier to imagine what the dress could look like sewn with a modern fabric.

Simplicity patterns also carry a line of Project Runway patterns that are a bit more modern and give you lots of options.  The only thing I don't like about them is the way they measure the fabric you need.  Since you are picking which pieces of the pattern you want, they list the amount of fabric each piece would require on its own.  This can result in you overbuying fabric (if there is such a thing  Grin).

Simplicity also carries some lines with "character" tie-ins (Hannah Montana, That's So Raven, etc.).  I don't necessarily like the shows, but the clothes are more hip than most.

I was just about to type the same question for my 8 yr old! It's hard to find dress patterns that aren't babyish or faddy/trendy, but yet are sweet. I'd love to see some great ideas, too.

I made the Miss Madeline pattern for my 6 year old last year (she's more like a size 8/9 though).

              I'll try find a pic...

Maybe still too "little girlish" for a 9 year old?  I really liked it because it didn't look like an enlarged cute 3 year old dress but still kept her a little girl.

I (sorta) hate to blow my own horn, but I could never find exactly the pattern I wanted either, so I made up a set of block patterns and now I just make up my own pattern whenever I need one.  Really.  Go to www.childrensfashionworkshop.com and click on the "patterns" tab.

                Best of luck!

I LOVE all of Julie's patterns. They come together super quick. I have a made the georgia dress and the little bow chick dress in size 8/10 for nine year olds as gifts and seen them proudly wearing them around town. That is the best feeling. Smiley

I made this dress this spring for my TALL 8 yr old. I based it off the spring ruffle shirt pattern on SMS but did some gathers in the front instead of the pleats. For the rest, I winged it! We decided to nix the tie around the waist.

I just made this for my 2 yr old & its adorable. The model on the cover is probably around 9 & still looks just as cute & there are many modifications for sleeves & lengths
