thread getting tangled up in my fabric when i sew?!

thread getting tangled up in my fabric when i sew?!
    on: January 19, 2010, 08:41:54 AM
I just got my first sewing machine (Cheesy) but every time i start to sew, i make it 2 seconds before the thread gets all tangled up on the bottom of the fabric. How do i stop this so i can sew straight and smoothly?

When I have this problem, it usually has something to do with my bobbin thread.  Even though I carefully load it, it will somehow come "unhooked."

I have a Brother machine.  When the bobbin is threaded properly, the bobbin thread itself is pulled across the top of the bobbin and fed through the plate between the feed dogs.  When it gets messed up, it goes directly through the plate and straight off the bobbin.  This means I have no tension on my bobbin thread.  My threads will get messy and loose, then they will tangle and lock up my machine (or ruin my seam).

You could also check your tension on your top thread.  Some machines are more temperamental about these things.

      Good luck!

when you start your seam, do you hold the top and bottome threads behind the needle for a couple of stitches? If not, that may be one of the causes - Without any tension on the back of the thread, the thread tail can get pulled into the bobbin area and get knotted up...
