    hi,
I just bought myself my first sewing machine and I wanted to use it for quilting, and I looked at some presser foot attachments but i couldn't find any called "walking foot"  and i was wondering if  a "1/4"" foot the same thing?
    thanks!

Nope, it's not the same.  The 1/4 foot is usually used for quilting when you're piecing and want an accurate seam allowance.  A Walking foot is usually separate and will cost you at least $20.  Here's a link to a good photo of one I found on flickr:  http://www.flickr.com/photos/shunklies/2602221234/
Most have the large white box looking thing in the back and will screw on to your foot holder.  I found some great video on youtube for how to use one since mine didn't come with any instructions.  I use mine all the time and highly recommend one.

yikes.....it's definitely not the same.  the 1/4 in foot is really good for piecing and really helpful in maintaining that 1/4"seam.  The walking foot, for me personally is good when I'm quilting, especially when I'm outlining or stitching in the ditch, and also doing the binding....it has additional feet on the bottom a bit larger than the standard feet attachments but it sure does hold the fabric well and keep you sewing in a straight line.  there are so many tutorials....check out youtube and type in quilting or walking foot and there are a lot of videos on there.
