Michiganders?

    Michiganders?
    on: January 27, 2010, 11:19:46 AM
I absolutely love the idea of a sewing circle.  I am in Ypsilanti, are there any locals that would be interested in joining?  Not sure where we could do it, maybe the library? Having it a different people's houses may be possible, but could be difficult in terms of space and families.  Anyone have ideas?

Hi!  I am in Michigan, in Grosse Pointe which is about an hour from Ypsilanti.  I would love to start a sewing group of some sort!  If anyone is interested in coming here my husband and I live in a flat with a pretty decent amount of space for spreading out (we don't have too much furniture which helps!)  I do have a pretty significant amount of table space available too.

I am open to any other options including driving an hour or so as well!  I am up for hand sewing or machine sewing too!

I'm in Ann Arbor and looooooove the idea of getting together with other sewers.  My problem right now is that I have a six month old who doesn't let me get much done during the day, so I usually have to do all of my sewing at night.
I attend a couple of different playgroups with my daughter and have noticed a definite interest in a lot of the moms to learn how to sew, and I've already had a couple of them over to my place to teach them the basics.  I'm sure they would most likely be interested in a sewing circle as well.

I'm in Michigan as well, but am a bit further away in White Lake Smiley  I would love a sewing circle, especially one local to me, although I consider myself a beginner.

I'm in SW Michigan and would love to start a group here.  If anyone is in my area and interested let me know!

Wow, it sounds like there is some interest in our area.  Now how do we go about setting something up?  Anyone have any ideas?  Like nmn838, I only have time in the evenings or on a weekend maybe once a month?  I have two little ones and work full time.

We recently started a Sewing Day in our church basement.  It's been slow to take off--last month I was the only one there, but I still got quite a bit done, so I didn't mind too much.

It's the second Saturday of the month, from noon until 5, at Salem United Church of Christ in downtown Farmington.  I was originally hoping that we could do group sewing projects for charity, but so far, people just come and work on their own projects.  Hopefully we'll get enough interest to do something as a group eventually.

Would love to meet up with other sewing fans!

I am in Ann Arbor as well.  Adding something to my busy calendar is crazy but I would love to.  I have been doing some online quilt-a-longs.  Once a month would be fun if we could find a space - church basement seems like a great idea.

I'm in West Bloomfield and would love to join a once a month type thing! Maybe the church in Farmington as that's not too far at all! Also have 2 young kids and limited time. Otherwise I would offer to organize something! Hope something gets going!

I am so excited that so many people are interested!  I plotted everyone's approximate locations on a google map so we could see where everyone is coming from.  You can check it out here: http://maps.google.com/maps/ms?ie=UTF8&hq=&hnear=804+Neff+Rd,+Grosse+Pointe,+Wayne,+Michigan+48230&msa=0&msid=101389843180453006155.00047e62df4b27cb786bb&ll=42.506528,-83.243408&spn=0.773466,1.766052&z=9 (sorry about the ugly link).  I think the church in Farmington could be a great location but I suppose it brings up the issue of that groups original intended purpose.

The other thing I came up with is that a lot of the libraries in the area have public meeting space that is available for free or a nominal fee.  I would be happy to look into this further and be in charge of setting it up if it would work well for others.  The library in Ann Arbor specifies that the room can only be used 4 times per year by any specific group and I would guess that others have similar policies.  If that is the case, or even if it seems like a good plan, we can pick 2-3 locations and rotate each month.

It sounds like it would be best to try to find one weekend day and try to do once a month at least to start.  Perhaps we could aim to get it up and running by the mid-end of February.  Is Saturday or Sunday best for everyone?  I am open to either.  If we are going with a library I know a few are closed on Sundays and most have very short hours (mine is open 1-5 on Sundays.)

I'd be interested in joining too! I'm in Oak Park, which is pretty central to most of you. I think a library is a great idea!

I'm a little farther north in Midland but always need a reason to drive south---I'm a University of Michigan grad so I love to visit Ann Arbor.

One idea would be to partner with a shop and have a lock-in on a Friday night or a Sunday afternoon---our shop here in town does this once a month but the crowd is a little aged (and I'm no spring chicken!).   I'm willing to drive...

I would join, too.  I'm in Ferndale, so either the Farmington church or another location would work really well!
