Minneapolis/St. Paul

    Minneapolis/St. Paul
    on: January 28, 2010, 10:36:20 AM
I would love to start a group of modern quilters. There are quilt shops around that have groups, but I haven't found one that fits. I live in Minneapolis and would be interested in finding a set location to meet - probably once a month. I've been quilting for about 3 years and feel that a group would really introduce me to new techniques and fun support!

Hi!  I just started quilting this fall but have been sewing for years.  I'd love to meet other modern quilters...so far I know zero!  I live in Inver Grove Heights, MN.

I also live in Minneapolis and would love to find a sewing group with more modern/fresh quilting and sewing interests.  I've been quilting for less than a year, but have been sewing and making clothing/accessories for several years now.  A group that met 1/month would be perfect for me.

I live in St. Paul and would love to join a sewing circle. I just began quilting, but have been sewing for years. Meeting once a month sounds perfect- I would love to learn more about modern quilting/ sewing from others!

Great - I'm so glad people are interested! I know there is a modern quilt guild starting up here in Minneapolis, so that could be a good resource/secondary group, but from their website, it doesn't seem like they're meeting regularly. (http://minneapolismodernquiltguild.ning.com/)

I know of a few places in my neighborhood that I was going to talk to about classes - not sure how the group feels about meeting at a quilt shop vs. somewhere else. I live close to Crafty Planet in NE Minneapolis, which is a quilt shop - they have a small class area. There is also a small retail shop nearby, I Like You, which has a back area as well. Let me know what your thoughts are - if you have a great place near you - let us know. I'll check with these two places, just to start some conversations, but we should check out all possibilities (including a roaming location group?).

I've been sewing for a couple years now, but have been intimidated by quilting.  I'd love to join a group to help with techniques and ideas for quilts and other sewing patterns and projects.  I'm located on the Coon Rapids/Andover border - but can travel anywhere (um, within reason Smiley) Once a month sound perfect....

I kind of like the idea of meeting at a quilt shop to start...it's a nice neutral place to get to know one another and the ability to buy supplies right there is handy, too.  I've never been to any of the places that you mentioned but I would think that a shop with a classroom area would be perfect.  Thanks so much - Ruth

Those two shops would be perfect for meeting and sewing together. I really love Crafty Planet in NE. What kind of projects is everyone interested in quilting?

I'm very excited to meet everyone and start sewing together!

I may have found a place!!!! We still need to discuss, but I talked with the owner of Sewtropolis - http://www.sewtropolis.com/ in south Minneapolis (Nicolette and Diamond Lake). She started the Modern Quilter's Guild, but hasn't had time to organize a group meeting...she is willing to host. Her place is just starting out and has a lot of room for gathering and possibly even sewing. I'll post again after talking with her about available times, etc.

rcw - I make a lot of baby quilts these days, because I'm at the age where every-other collage pal is expecting their 1st, 2nd...etc. I'm really interested in getting some inspiration from others about techniques and different modern styles. Can't wait to get this going!

I'm so excited!  I've never been to Sewtropolis - I'm curious to check it out.  Do we think we could pull together a meeting by the end of Feb or early March??

Hi everyone! Nikol at Sewtropolis is very excited to host the beginnings of a modern quilters guild. I have spoken with her in person and through emails and she suggested Tuesday evenings, since that is when people at her discussion were available. We worked out a time to kick off the meetings, though depending on group participation, this could change and nothing is set - it was just a good time for her when there were no classes scheduled.

SO. Tuesday, March 23rd at 6:00 at her shop. Just an informal gathering to meet others interested and start planning how meetings will run, setting times, etc. (We were thinking around 2 hours)

Sewtropolis is located in south Minneapolis on Diamond Lake Road, just west of Nicolette.

Spread the word, bring your friends, and start thinking about topics you would like to discuss at meetings. Projects, sew-togethers, challenges, exhibits....we can make this whatever we like. I can't wait to meet you - thanks for being interested in a Twin Cities group!

FANTASTIC!  Thanks for all the research/work you did...I can't wait to meet everyone.

                            I'll be there!
