favorite patterns for little boys?

    favorite patterns for little boys?
    on: August 29, 2008, 07:52:11 PM
I'm always on the lookout for cute items to make for my 4-year-old son, but find that it's often slim pickings?

Anyone have a favorite pattern for a little boy you can recommend?  I just made him the Favorite Things little hooded jacket and he loves it.

    TIA,
    Lisa

I love Farbenmix, so I recommend the Zoe...which is a raglan shirt.  It is very easy to make.  I also recommend the Mika pants.  And, if you want we are about to begin a sew-a-long on my blog.  I'll take you step by step through each pattern.  Nancy Langdon is going to be doing a girls' version of the Mika pants too.

      My blog is: http://wondermommy.wordpress.com

I'm also having a giveaway for the Mika pants pattern so make sure you leave a comment on the giveaway post!

I've been making a ton of things out of a japanese craft book for my son. ISBN 4-579-11121-4.
I bought it through Pomodour24's shop on etsy.com. The english title is "New York Style Kids part 2"

It has a blazer/canvas jacket, 2 dress shirts, shorts/pants, a tie, sweatshirt, jacket and overalls patterns. I get tons of compliments on the items I have made for my son.

I adore Ottobre Design magazine (http://www.OttobreDesign.com) - they have tons of great boy patterns and are drafted beautifully.  You can get a single issue off eBay and several other online retailers (just Google it).  Hope this helps you!

P.S.  Kwik Sew has some nice basic boy patterns too - I love their raglan t-shirt #2894 tho it's for size 4-14, the picture might look a little dorky, but the shirts are fabulous!

Thanks for posting the question and for those of you that replied.  I'm always looking for boy ideas.  I have three boys and a host of girl ideas bookmarked, but it appears that little girls are not for me... Smiley

A few basic patterns with interesting combinations will go a long way for boys.  Raglan shirts, hoodies, jeans, baggy elastic waist pants.  But if you are looking for completely unique fun style I would check this site.

she sells clothing--it is not a free pattern site or a blog with how-to write ups but it is wonderful and inspiring.

i like ottobre too, and i have had good luck with burda patterns. I will have to check out the farbenmix! The britches and bloomers pattern is quick and easy to sew too.

Thanks for the thread.  I have two boys but haven't made them anything yet.  Girls stuff is so cute and easy but I have no girl!   I'm working on a hat for my little one from here http://madebypetchy.blogspot.com/2008/06/free-pattern-toddler-hatbonnet.html...but a hat doesn't really count as clothes.

I love the look New York Style for Kids book! (link for anyone else interested is here: http://www.etsy.com/view_listing.php?ref=vt_related_1&listing_id=15731453)  But weird to buy a book about New York Style from Japan.Smiley

Thank you for starting this thread.  I have a two year old son and love to sew, but like you said, the pickings are slim.  I often feel like a lame mom because I sew for his girl cousins more than I do for him.

Here's what I've found so far:  a collared button-up shirt pattern will get you far. (I have Butterick 6030 but it is for babies and toddlers)  There always seem to be so many variations on that pattern.  I also recently purchased a pattern for a blazer that includes boys' and men's sizes.  (Simplicity 3708)  I haven't tried it yet, but hope to soon.  It says it's easy, but looks nicer than most easy patterns.

I'm so glad to see this post, too.  The only thing I've made for my son are pants, using the tutorial from Rookie Moms http://www.rookiemoms.com/make-some-easy-kids-pants/ and Simplicity 2907.  I keep daring myself to branch out and make him some shirts and jackets.  Thanks for all the great suggestions here!

In addition to the Oliver + S patterns (I love the tea party playsuit! So precious) SImplicity 4711 is fantastic.  Makes a nice little shorts + attached shirt with some collar options.

I made that playsuit by Oliver + S for a couple of little boys and it worked great!

                                Yeah,
I have three little ones (almost 2 yrs and 9 mo. twins) all boys.
I'm really liking some of the Burda patterns for boys.  I don't have the numbers right now, but they're the only one of the larger commercial pattern makers that seem to have anything for little boys beyond one or two fleece jackets (nothing against them, but how many of those do you need!?)
I also raided my mom's pattern archive for some boy things.  She had quite a few from "back in the day" of the 80's when there were a lot more sewing patterns for little ones.
P.S. Martha Pullen of Sew Beautiful Magazine (sewbeautiful.com) has some different things on her site.  Don't be scared.  You don't have to add all of the smocking and french heirloom sewing techniques, and then they make up into adorable little jumpers and shortalls and such.
                                Best of luck!
