HELP! beginner sewer trying to figure out lining!

HELP! beginner sewer trying to figure out lining!
    on: February 05, 2010, 10:06:53 PM
I've begun sewing in the last few months (must be an inherited trait, pretty good with no training!) but I'm making a cosmetic bag (small, 7" top, 9" bottom and 5" deep) but for the LIFE of me cannot figure out how to sew the lining properly! currently I am cutting 2 pieces of outside fabric, 2 pieces of inside fabric and 2 pieces of sew-in fusing stabilizer (thicker, I love it), I then sew the zipper on the top of the the still seperate pieces and then sew closed and make my boxed corner edges but the inside bottom looks awful Sad....... can anyone help? I can't find a youtube or anything about this..... well without the zipper at the top. Thanks...........

       Hi Alyssa Sonny ,

What looks bad-the bottom of the bag where the lining is?
OR the underside of the top stitching?

I've not made purses with that many layers of fabric-and I think that might be what the problem is-bunchiness, and too bulky?

Have you typed here at this site and put in bag making in the search box?

They have had a lot of tutorials on bag making and I feel sure there is something that can help.

Hang in there! We all have those moments-no matter how long you sew, you will find out a seam ripper can be your BEST FRIEND!

Let us know how it goes!

Elaine- thank you for the response; I just opened up this account last night, is there a way to post pictures on this site? Yes there is! I will sew one up and take a picture to show you step by step, bunchiness isn't the issue and you're darn RIGHT seam ripper is my BFF, i call her Pinkie, cause she's pink.  Check later for pictures... Zippered pouches aren't difficult, but there are few tricks that really help make it work out right and IMO it's not worth hours of frustration to figure out when there are easily 487 different zippered pouch patterns/tutorials available Smiley

I highly recommend the patterns from these lovely ladies - they each have a few different tricks and techniques you won't get from the free tutorials.  These patterns definitely result in a professional looking finished product.

There are also many free ones available - the first and last one seem to be close to what you describe.

Alyssa! LOVE that you named your seam ripper Pinkie! Too cute!

And Yorkie Mischief (that is one cute nickname-my friend had Yorkies-so I GET what you're saying!)...anyway.. Ms. Yorkie, thank you so much for the wonderful list of tutorials! You are so kind. I need to look at them and keep as references!

The folks on this site are the best and so helpful.
I have found that sewers/crafters/artists are generous and are so glad to help others, so they can create and express their ideas!!

            Have a great weekend!!
