Q about sewing nylon
on: February 10, 2010, 11:22:08 AM
I'm making some reusable snack bags for my kids. I was going to use nylon for the lining, but I've never sewn with it before. Is there anything extra I need to do to make sure it doesn't fray after sewing?
Thanks!

As long as you have a decent seam allowance, you should be just fine. Just remember that nylon can be a bit slippery sometimes, so pin well and take it slow if needed.

I agree with the previous reply, and if you want even more assurance that the fraying won't ruin the bag, use a small zig-zag stitch when you sew...small meaning narrow..if the seam allowance does fray, the zigzag will prevent it from fraying through the seamline. You can even get more assurance if you use a product like FrayCheck on the edges after you finish sewing the seams...I think that's a little overkill, but it's an option.

Thanks for your input! I got a couple bags done. Will give them to the kids tomorrow and then wash them and see what happens. Hopefully they will come out okay.
They will end up being washed frequently so it will be a good test.
Thanks again!
