Pattern markings transferring to fabric
on: February 13, 2010, 08:37:22 PM
This may seem silly, but how do you transfer markings (like where to put buttons, zippers, pleats, etc.) from the pattern tissue paper to the fabric, since the fabric is under the tissue paper when you are cutting it? Do you just slice through the pattern paper somehow and then chalk on the fabric or what?

Most people do exactly that- slice through the pattern with your chalk until the mark is on the fabric. I have this marker:

I bought mine at Joann's so you should be able to find something similar.

Thanks! It seemed like the only way but made me think maybe I was going about the whole project wrong somehow...

My mother showed me this method and I use it. This is helpful with darts and pleats especially. I place the pattern tissue on the fabric to be marked and push a pin (not the plastic ball top ones) through the spot on pattern piece and into the fabric I then gently pull the pattern tissue off, making a small hole in the tissue and leaving the pin in the fabric. I then use a disappearing marker to mark the spot or just leave the pin in place, depending on the situation. I hope this makes sense. It's always worked for me. The next time I use the pattern I just use the marker over the hole and it makes a mark on the fabric.

For notches and the ends of the dart legs, I snip into the pattern right on the marking but not beyond it (lest it get into the seam allowance). This is super fast and more accurate I've found.

If possible I just put a snip in the seam allowance. For button position I might trace with thread and snip before I pull the pattern off especially if you are going through two layers then you can mark both layers at once. You can also put pins on the line and then run your chalk along the pins from the back side.
My mom has light and dark chalk paper and a tracing wheel and that is probably the fastest and most accurate method. When you are cutting double you use a piece of folded chalk paper, slide the top half under the pattern but on top of one side and then the bottom half under both pieces of fabric. Then you just trace over the pattern darts or whatever with your little wheel and it transfers the lines into little dots on your fabric.
