Help with darts please!! (Phoebe Bag)
    on: March 14, 2010, 09:41:15 PM
I am attempting to make the Phoebe Bag here (http://artsycraftybabe.typepad.com/tutorials/phoebe_bag.pdf ).  This is my first time sewing a purse... or with interfacing.. or sewing darts! Haha!  I like to challenge myself!  Anyway, I have sewn the darts but am wondering what to do with them once they are sewn?  I assume I press them, but which way?  Does it matter which way I press them?

    Thanks for your help!

For this bag, it probably doesn't matter which way you press them. Since there is interfacing and a lining, you might want to press the darts in opposite directions to reduce the bulk at the seams.
I would set out all the pieces of your bag. Line up your darts and where the seams will be placed. Then, pin the darts down in opposite directions at these seams and press in place.
This is a really cute bag and I hope to make one for myself very soon! I would love to see a photo of yours when it's finished.
      Good luck!

        Thanks for your help, Irene!

I was able to finish the bag last night.  I guess being the first bag I have made it's not too terrible.  But there were a lot of mistakes.  I seem to have an issue with my fabric always puckering on her.  I've tried doing lots of pinning so the fabric doesn't push over so much and bunch up, but that only seems to be helping a bit.

Anyway, it was my first time sewing darts, my first time sewing with interfacing and my first time using a magnetic snap!  Oh.. and my first bag of any type.

I will be posting pictures on my blog soon (http://smallt0wngirl.wordpress.com/ ).  Hopefully later today or tomorrow.

Thanks again for you help.  Looks like I will need more bag practice... but I had fun sewing it anyway! Smiley

Can you adjust your pressure foot at all? It sounds like there might be too much pressure on your fabric as it's being feed through.
If you cannot adjust the pressure, then you might want to invest in a Walking foot. This is give you even feeding of your top and bottom fabrics which is especially important when using interfacing.
Just some things to maybe look at to help with the puckering. Hope that helps.
