Sewing room question

    Sewing room question
    on: August 31, 2008, 02:32:33 PM
So, here's an important sewing skill: creating a space to work in!  I suddenly have a sewing room -slash- office to decorate and organize any way I want...does anyone know of good resources for inspiration?  I can't even decide on a color!!  If anyone has blogged about their room or posted pictures online, I would love to have a link.

    Thanks!

I am working on mine as well.  Smiley  It's almost done...just some more stuff (ie fabric) to put away and finish painting some cabinets.  I just blogged about it last weeks or so.  I painted it the color of my old 50's White sewing machine I was given by my hubby's grandma.

      Have fun decorating yours!

        Hi everyone.

I would love to hear some tips too!  I only have a corner in my bedroom to spare and need to fit it all in.  Also I have a hard time with the little stuff.  Where do you put all your needles and fabric markers and buttons and....?

        Thanks for the help!

I'm fortunate to have a whole sewing room now, but before we moved I shared space in our living room which forced me to get organized. My tip resolves around "Where do you put all your needles and fabric markers and buttons and....?"

My needles, fabric marker, scissors, small plastic cutting boards, rippers, etc... all living in a bathroom bag. A lot of people sew their own, but I had a spare one in the house that I never travelled with and it worked perflectly. Lots of pockets, durable and could be hung by my machine for easy access.

I've assigned everything a pocket that it belongs in. Unless my husband touches it, I can always find what I need! My buttons, snaps, embroidery thread and misc all living in a small plastic box with lots of compartments.

            Good luck organizing!

My DH just cleaned out our spare bedroom so I am looking for ideas, too. One of the places I like to look at pictures is this flickr group.  I hope to post some pictures here once my room is done.

Those are some great links, thanks.  I'm trying to come up with ideas for when we move to the new house.  These help a lot.

I found a new use for an old item I'd almost thrown away a dozen times.  It's a spinning utensil holder from Wal-Mart.  I just spent twenty minutes searching for it on the site, apparently they don't sell them anymore, and google's never heard of such a thing, lol.  It originally came with a bunch of cheap plastic utensils and has lots of room in it.  I use it on my sewing table for my scissors, seam ripper, air markers, fabric markers, extra pens and pencils, basically anything that will stand upright.  When I get my sewing room done I'll post some pics of it and the utensil holder here.  But that's my main trick - I try to reuse anything I possibly can for storage in one way or another.  I even take cereal boxes apart, cover them with scrapbooking paper, and reglue them into hinged boxes for simple storage.  I try to make it a game with myself, to see how much I can keep out of the recycling bin and how much money I can save myself in organizational tools.

I outfitted my sewing room with ClosetMaid fixtures - wire and pressed shelves that can easily be re-configured, and those great wire baskets for my fabric.  One important tip: whatever containers you use, try to use a material you can see through, like wire or clear plastic.  And label all your containers clearly on all sides.  Nothing squelches the creative process more than searching for hours for the blue box that you are absolutely sure contains what you need and then finding it in a red bag.
