Advice for Sewing with Laminates

    Advice for Sewing with Laminates
    on: April 14, 2010, 03:26:43 PM
    Hello all.

As the rainy season is upon us where I live, I was thinking that I'd try my hand at sewing a raincoat for my daughter.

I have zero experience with laminates.  Does anyone have advice that would be helpful?  Should I use a special needle?  Any particular prep work that should be done (other than washing) before I begin my sewing?  Is there one stitch that is better or more appropriate than another?

    Thanks!!

I don't have much experience but I can offer a few tips. Use 100% polyester thread and a longer stitch length. I think I used a universal needle.

Don't pin pieces together, use paper clips to avoid any extra holes.

      Good luck!

Most laminates don't like to be washed. Usually a spot wash will do when the garment is dirty. Otherwise, if you machine wash it, permanent wrinkles can form which will weaken the coating.
Along with Cindy's great advice, I also suggest buying a Teflon foot. They are relatively inexpensive and can be found at most shops that repair & sell sewing machines. (The foot for my Janome was $8.)
The teflon foot helps to keep the fabric moving under and through your pressure foot. Laminates are "sticky" and will often not move through your machine well.
If you would rather not purchase another foot, then I've heard that putting duck tape on the bottom of your pressure foot works well too. I've never tried it myself so I can't attest to how well it works.
        Have fun!
