    detachable straps/ribbons on quilt?
    on: September 03, 2008, 09:07:43 AM
I've made a quilted chuppah (wedding canopy) for friends and we're trying to figure out the best way to attach it to the four free-standing poles. The poles each have a hook on the top (ie, a closed circle that one might tie ribbons to). We're trying to come up with a way to attach fabric "straps" or ribbons to the 4 corners of the quilt that will be strong, secure, and removable after the ceremony (so they can later enjoy the chuppah quilt as a regular quilt). Does anyone have any ideas for this? I'm wondering if it's best to just sew some fabric to the corners and attempt to remove it later, attach straps via O or D rings (like purse straps) or something else? Any thoughts would be appreciated. Thank you.

You could attach some fabric with grommets with basting stitches (I'd do two ot three rows) those would be easy to remove but should last through the ceremony. There was a grommet tutorial on Sew Mama Sew during Summer Sewing Month:

What if you sewed a few ribbons diagonally across each corner of the quilt?  To help give you a better picture, some kitchen towels have twill tape across a corner, sewed into the seams, so it can be hung on hooks.  Perhaps, you could use some color coordinating ribbons to do sew into the corners, then loop more ribbons through the sewed ones and through the hooks on the pole. It should be strong enough especially if you use wired ribbon to connect between the corners and the poles.  After the ceremony, the sewed ribbon can stay on the quilt and be part of the decor of the bedding.  I hope this makes sense.  If not, I could try and take a picture, so you know what I'm talking about.  Good luck and really-what a lovely idea.

Thanks for the suggestions. I think I'll try the diagonal ribbons first -- or play with them before sewing to see if they seem strong enough -- and then try the grommets as necessary.

Can the corners of the quilt actually be draped OVER the poles or do they have to be tied? You could put the poles close enough together so that there is enough of the quilt to drape over the poles and then secure the corners by tying wide ribbons in bows over the top of the quilt corners and the tops of the poles. Not sure if that makes sense, I'm not sure how to explain it better. It would just keep you from having to actually attach anything to the quilt.
