Putting your child's name on clothing to personalize it

I'm making my daughter a dress and want to put her name on it to make it specifically hers but heard you shouldn't do that. What's your opinion? Thank you! =)

Is the fear that someone will then know her name and be able to do something bad to her?  There are so many ways to find out a child's name (usually I pick them up just hanging around the park and hearing kids and parents calling to each other).  If you want to do it, I'd say go for it.

If you don't want to put her name on there, is there some kind of symbol you can use?  My son's middle name is Thorbjorn (which means Thor's bear), so I like to use bears on things I make for him.
