Best Way to Lead a Sewing Class?

Best Way to Lead a Sewing Class?
    on: May 25, 2010, 02:46:18 PM
This is kind of a last minute question, but here goes:
Tomorrow, I'm leading a small "class" at a church playdate. We'll be making the Lemonade Dress (from Ruffles and Stuff - google it. It's ADORABLE!). I've made one, and it took about 45 minutes. I made one with a friend (a BEGINNING sewer) yesterday...and it took her 90 minutes.

When I teach the class on Wednesday, the sewers will be advanced beginner  to intermediate. Would it be better for me to make a dress along with them, and be available for questions, or would it be better to "hover" and give general directions? There are only three seams, so it's not like the "directions" would be very in depth! Still, if they have never sewn on knit before, or adjusted the tension on their machine, it could be interesting...

As a long time sewing teacher I find it near impossible to actually sew when I teach.... just to many questions and I never get anything done.  With more advanced seamsters it might be easier but I think you are better off to be there to teach than to partisipate.

I agree. If I haven't made the project I'm supposed to teach, then of course I'll have to make it with them or actually try to stay one step ahead of them.
Most of the time, I have already sewn the item at least once prior to the class and I usually have the item at the class as a reference.
I spend class time answering questions, fixing machines and peering over shoulders.  Grin

Thanks, guys!!! The class went really well this morning. We had two machines, and four ladies who wanted to make dresses, so we took turns cutting and sewing. I did get a dress done while everybody else was getting set up...and I'm glad I did. I think it inspired a few more ladies to jump in and cut out some fabric. :-)
