      A very good book, especially for beginners, is Sew Everything Workshop by Diane Rupp.  Has patterns included and has some really great projects!  Check it out.  You can find it on amazon.

          Another good book is The Dorling Kindersley book of Sewing - Lots of pictures, lots of explanation. Very much a reference book, rather than a teaching aid - I find it invaluable.
