What is a good step 2 sewing machine?

I have had a basic singer sewing machine for 20 years and I want to upgrade.  What would be a good next step up for someone who just sews a few hours a week as a hobby? I don't quilt.  I just sew clothing and home decorating stuff.  I don't have tons of money to spend but want a good machine that will last me another 20 years.  There are three stores in town so I can chose between Janome, Pfaff, Brother, and Bernina.  I don't even know where to start!

I would recommend against the Brother, even though it's probably the most affordable.  They have lots of fancy gadgets for the money - automatic thread cutters, digitized, embroidery, speed controls, etc. but the quality of the stitch is not so great.

I have a Bernina Activa 230 and it does almost everything I need.  It's got a small arm on the it but if you don't quilt, that's OK.  I use it mostly to sew bags.  The stitch quality is great.  The 220 is a bit less expensive with a few less options.

The others have similar lines.  Don't go for the "budget" lines for your new machine (I think Bernina's is the Bernette).  Go for the entry level base model - one that takes the same feet and has the same motor as the pricier, fancier models.  Once you are at the base model, going up in price gets you more stitches, a longer arm, more feet and accessories, etc. 

Also, they have deals all the time.  Ask the dealer when Bernina/Pfaff/Janome has their next big sale coming up.  If there isn't a sale then try to get extra accessories like the extension table or the $100 walking foot included.  It doesn't hurt to ask!
