     * How did you select colors for your personal thread collection?  I don't have much a collection.  I'm a poor grad student so I only get thread that I need for a project.
        * Do you always match the color perfectly to your project?   not really
        * Do you ever use contrasting thread?  thats frequently my preference
        * Do you use the same color in the bobbin as the upper thread?  It never occurred to me not to!  (exciting new thought)
        * What if a fabric has big areas of very different colors?  That's why I like to go with contrasting thread.  I like multicolored too.  Or I go with neutral.
        * Do you have any tips or suggestions about choosing thread?  um, no?
        * Can you show us a picture(s) of your thread collection?  Not right now, out of state for a bit.
        * Do you ever buy thread because you fall in love with the color (without a particular project in mind)?  no, don't have the money for it right now.
        * Do you "invest" in thread?  um, no.  isn't that the same question as above?
        * What types of thread do you have? (elastic, quilting, all-purpose, wool, etc.)  quilting/embroidery/all purpose, mostly.  I *might* have some other stuff.

        * How did you select colors for your personal thread collection?--sometimes to match a fabric, sometimes for contrast
            * Do you always match the color perfectly to your project?--no
            * Do you ever use contrasting thread?--yes, i love to use contrast especially with a zigzag stitch on a hem or a waistband
            * Do you use the same color in the bobbin as the upper thread? -- usually
            * What if a fabric has big areas of very different colors?--I'll use one color that coordinates best with the print
            * Do you have any tips or suggestions about choosing thread?--choose a shade that looks slightly darker than your fabric when on the spool
            * Can you show us a picture(s) of your thread collection?--sorry, not available, but I do keep my spools in pretty tins
            * Do you ever buy thread because you fall in love with the color (without a particular project in mind)?--no, I'm fairly practical when it comes to thread
            * Do you "invest" in thread?--I like to use quality thread
            * What types of thread do you have? (elastic, quilting, all-purpose, wool, etc.)--regular, waxed, and denim-sewing--elastic is on the shopping list

The following questions are related to this blog post.
http://sewmamasew.com/blog2/?p=8780  Answer below or on your own blog.

           * How did you select colors for your personal thread collection?

Easy.  I bought the 100 color Guttermann cotton thread set and the even larger Madeira polyester thead set.  I forget how many colors but it comes in a three drawer chest.

              * Do you always match the color perfectly to your project?

          Yes.

              * Do you ever use contrasting thread?

No, but I would like to.  Probably when I get a better sewing machine.  I have a starter machine and the stitches are not perfect enough to use contrasting thread.  I spent three times as much on my thead collection as I did on my sewing machine!

              * Do you use the same color in the bobbin as the upper thread?
Not usually. I use the matching thread for the "right" side and am using up my old Coates and Clark thread in the bobbin.

              * What if a fabric has big areas of very different colors?

          I switch threads!

              * Do you have any tips or suggestions about choosing thread?

I bought the cotton Gutermann for quilting projects and use the Madeira polyester on everything else. I do think it's important to have matching or at least coordinating thread.  I have seen friends sewing projects which were beautiful except for the color of their thread.

              * Can you show us a picture(s) of your thread collection?

Sorry, not today.  I tossed the Gutermann thread cabinet because I just didn't have the space for it.  I might replace it someday at Joann's.

              * Do you ever buy thread because you fall in love with the color (without a particular project in mind)?

Not so far.  I could see it happening though.

              * Do you "invest" in thread?

Yes! I felt it was important to have complete thread sets even though I am a beginning sewer.  Also, we recently moved to the middle of nowhere and I quickly discovered that (a single spool of) thread is the one thing you can't buy online. It's impossible to color match on a computer screen! That's why I just bought thread sets.

              * What types of thread do you have? (elastic, quilting, all-purpose, wool, etc.)

Polyester machine embroidery thread - for regular sewing
          Cotton thread - for quilting
          Machine quilting thread.

How did you select colors for your personal thread collection? I am a threadaholic, I don't need an excuse like a new project to purchase new thread. Come to think of it, it doesn't even have to be new, I pick it up at yard sales and the thrift store if it looks to be in decent shape.
                * Do you always match the color perfectly to your project? No, I tend to use neutrals for piecing (white, greys, black)
                * Do you ever use contrasting thread? Yes, for the quilting a contrasting thread might be just the thing.
                * Do you use the same color in the bobbin as the upper thread? Sometimes, more when sewing clothing. For quilting not so much.
                * What if a fabric has big areas of very different colors? change thread color.
                * Do you have any tips or suggestions about choosing thread? Buy good quality thread, nothing can be more frustraing then thread breaking every 30 seconds or so. Experiment.
                * Can you show us a picture(s) of your thread collection? How would I ever put it all together in one spot? I would need a wide angle lens. Smiley
                * Do you ever buy thread because you fall in love with the color (without a particular project in mind)? Well, yes.
                * Do you "invest" in thread? Absolutely.
                * What types of thread do you have? (elastic, quilting, all-purpose, wool, etc.) I have elastic, monofiliment, wash-away, cotton in several different weights, polyester, rayon, silk, metallic, wooly nylon, ribbon floss and lets see, embroidery floss.

               * How did you select colors for your personal thread collection? Slowly build it up over time from project leftovers.
                  * Do you always match the color perfectly to your project? Typically yes.
                  * Do you ever use contrasting thread? Not often.
                  * Do you use the same color in the bobbin as the upper thread? Almost always.
                  * What if a fabric has big areas of very different colors? I pick a thread that will "pop" and show on those.
                  * Do you have any tips or suggestions about choosing thread? I am still learning myself. I do get embroidery thread for not much at a local thrift store.
                  * Can you show us a picture(s) of your thread collection? No..but when I got my "new to me" 1920s White Rotary it had been in another family for three generations. The first time I used a bobbin I unwound one and felt like I was going back in time as I unwound layers and layers of thread - must have been close to 20 colors wound on top of each other on the one bobbin.
                  * Do you ever buy thread because you fall in love with the color (without a particular project in mind)? At times.
                  * Do you "invest" in thread? I pick up neutrals when on big sale.
                  * What types of thread do you have? (elastic, quilting, all-purpose, wool, etc.) Quilting and all purpose.

                 * How did you select colors for your personal thread collection?  I buy colors as needed for projects and have accumulated lots of brands, colors, types.
                    * Do you always match the color perfectly to your project?   not always.  Sometimes for machine applique or embroidery.  It just depends, sometimes, on how "on fire" I am to start sewing -- a trip to the store to buy thread might take too long!
                    * Do you ever use contrasting thread?  Yes, depending on the effect I want...
                    * Do you use the same color in the bobbin as the upper thread?  Sometimes not.  Sometimes I just use up bobbins from other projects.
                    * What if a fabric has big areas of very different colors?  If the thread color will show, I just use a neutral.
                    * Do you have any tips or suggestions about choosing thread?  I try to buy "fresh" thread -- that has not been sitting on a shelf forever or displayed in the sun.
                    * Can you show us a picture(s) of your thread collection?  I wish I was that organized!
                    * Do you ever buy thread because you fall in love with the color (without a particular project in mind)?  No, that would be like falling off a cliff; once started, there would be no stopping, and where would I put it?
                    * Do you "invest" in thread?  Thread is an investment, because it holds everything together.  Why invest time and materials and trust it to cheap thread?
                    * What types of thread do you have? (elastic, quilting, all-purpose, wool, etc.)  Quilting, multi-purpose, embroidery, button, crochet, monofilament, a little of everything I think.

                  * How did you select colors for your personal thread collection? I usually match it to a fabric for a project.

                  * Do you always match the color perfectly to your project? Yes

                  * Do you ever use contrasting thread? No

                  * Do you use the same color in the bobbin as the upper thread? Yes, unless I'm doing machine applique. When I'm doing that, I use a really lightweight polyester thread by Mettler in the bobbin that gives the stitching a nicer look. I learned that in a class.

                  * What if a fabric has big areas of very different colors? I try to match the largest area of color or whatever color blends in the best.

                  * Do you have any tips or suggestions about choosing thread? Just buy the best quality you can afford. Cheap thread isn't worth it.

                  * Can you show us a picture(s) of your thread collection? No, it's scattered in a bunch of different places.

                  * Do you ever buy thread because you fall in love with the color (without a particular project in mind)? A few times, but not usually.

                  * Do you "invest" in thread? If it's on sale and I know I'll need a lot of it for quilting, I'll buy a bunch.

                  * What types of thread do you have? (elastic, quilting, all-purpose, wool, etc.) Cotton, polyester, elastic, nylon, embroidery, quilting, silk, vintage, metallic, all-purpose, tatting

How did you select colors for your personal thread collection? I pick whichever thread I need for my next project.

Do you always match the color perfectly to your project? Usually I find something that blends perfectly, but sometimes I go for something fun and different from the fabric.

Do you ever use contrasting thread? When I'm going for a funky or fun feel.

Do you use the same color in the bobbin as the upper thread? Almost always. I did have one emergency project where I was trying to finish a purse for a friend who was on her way over to my house. I ran out of top thread and only had a little way to go, so I substituted a different color.

What if a fabric has big areas of very different colors? I might go with a thread that matches the most predominant color or background, or sometimes I pick the color that most stands out and match the thread.

Do you have any tips or suggestions about choosing thread? You definitely want to have the fabric with you at the store, and hold up the thread against the fabric. When you think you've found a good match, still check some other colors because sometimes you'll be surprised.

Can you show us a picture(s) of your thread collection? No, but I keep my threads in a bright red box that is starting to get too small. My threads are over-flowing and the lid won't stay on anymore.

Do you ever buy thread because you fall in love with the color (without a particular project in mind)? Yes, I've bought pale pink, turquoise, and kelly green just for fun.

Do you "invest" in thread? I did buy WAY too much black and white, and I don't think I'll ever need more.

What types of thread do you have? (elastic, quilting, all-purpose, wool, etc.) I almost always use all-purpose, but I'm on beginner projects still. Can't wait to try some other kinds!

                          * Do you have any tips or suggestions about choosing thread?  If you're stuck in a rut, using the same color thread as the fabric.  Use a complementary color for a change.
                          * Can you show us a picture(s) of your thread collection? It's a mess and very disorganized at the moment, so I'd rather not.
                          * Do you ever buy thread because you fall in love with the color (without a particular project in mind)? nope.  I have to have fabric first, then comes the thread.

                        1. How did you select colors for personal collection? I mostly use white and off white thread for quilting and have a scattered variety of old spools of colors for any mending.

                        2. Do you always match the thread perfectly? I try to, but if it isn't exactly perfect, it's okay.

                        3. Do you ever use contrasting thread?  Not really.

                        4. Same color in bobbin as upper? yes, usually.

                        5. What if a fabric has big areas of different colors? In this case, neutral is the way to go.

                        6. Tips or suggestions for choosing thread? I usually trust my LQS and choose from their selections or ask someone working there to help me.

                        7. Show picture of collection?  To be honest, I don't truly have a collection worthy of a picture...that's why I'm entering to WIN a collection! LOL!

                        8. Ever buy thread because of a color w/o a particular project in mind? no

                        9. Do you invest in thread?
                        no

                        10. What types of thread to you have?  all purpose for piecing.

How did you select colors for your personal thread collection?
                              * Do you always match the color perfectly to your project? - I almost always match the thread color as closely as possible
                              * Do you ever use contrasting thread? - only when topstitching
                              * Do you use the same color in the bobbin as the upper thread? - yes, almost always
                              * What if a fabric has big areas of very different colors? - then I match one of the colors as closely as possible.
                              * Do you have any tips or suggestions about choosing thread? - buy the best quality thread you can afford. Good quality thread leaves less "fuzz" in your sewing machine and makes your projects hold up better in the wash and with wear.
                              * Can you show us a picture(s) of your thread collection? - no my digital camera is broken :/
                              * Do you ever buy thread because you fall in love with the color (without a particular project in mind)? - no, I only buy thread to match projects
                              * Do you "invest" in thread? - Yes, in that I usually buy the largest spools of thread I can find in the best quality I can afford.
                              * What types of thread do you have? (elastic, quilting, all-purpose, wool, etc.) Mostly all-purpose and 100% cotton, although I do have some pearl cotton for serging decorative edges, and topstitching thread.

How did you select colors for your personal thread collection?
My collection spans a few generations, so most of the thread I didn't actually select myself, but I love it all the same.  I've also found that very few colors really go out of style.  I find myself picking up wooden spools to match a project all the time.
Do you always match the color perfectly to your project?
Most of the time.  I get excited I find the perfect match already in my stash, but I don't need much of a reason to go thread shopping.
Do you ever use contrasting thread?
                            Sometimes.
Do you use the same color in the bobbin as the upper thread?
Not if the top and bottom fabrics are different, but most of the time, yes.
What if a fabric has big areas of very different colors?
That's a very good question.  I choose and pray.
Do you have any tips or suggestions about choosing thread?
You do get what you pay for.  And despite what people say about always using fresh thread, a good quality thread lasts. I have spools from my great grandmother that I still use, and cheap ones I refuse to.
Can you show us a picture(s) of your thread collection?
                            Of course!

My favorite part, the odd labels:

Where it hangs as art in my sewing room:

Do you ever buy thread because you fall in love with the color (without a particular project in mind)?
I have, but I try to limit myself to basics I know I'll use.
                            Do you “invest” in thread?
I got a Bernina for Christmas, and she's rather snobbish when it comes to thread, so I'm slowly building her a collection.  My old machine will happily sew with 30 year old thread from Zayre's.
What types of thread do you have? (elastic, quilting, all-purpose, wool, etc.)
Elastic, invisible, top-stitching, quilting, all-purpose, perle cotton, serger, hand sewing, silk, cotton, you name it.

Here is the link to my "most frequently used" thread stash.  Believe me - there are others in the bowels of my studio closet - but these are my go tos!

                               * How did you select colors for your personal thread collection? I am constantly on the look out for colors and textures of threads that make me drool!  I love some of the "heavier" threads they have out now that you have to use a special need with because they are so thick.
                                  * Do you always match the color perfectly to your project?   NO WAY!
                                  * Do you ever use contrasting thread?  Often.
                                  * Do you use the same color in the bobbin as the upper thread? Many times I do NOT. Particularly with art quilting.
                                  * What if a fabric has big areas of very different colors?  Vareigated or monofiliment.
                                  * Do you have any tips or suggestions about choosing thread?  eEXPERIMENT!
                                  * Can you show us a picture(s) of your thread collection?  See above link
                                  * Do you ever buy thread because you fall in love with the color - oh absolutely.
                                  * Do you "invest" in thread? Yes. Thread is a very important element to me in my work.
                                 * What types of thread do you have? Mostly cotton and metallics - however my goal this Christmas (!) is to stock up on some additional colors of silk and "thick" embellishing threads.

How did you select colors for your personal thread collection? I usually buy thread to match a project, but I also have a very large stash I inherited from my grandmother.  Sometimes, I just can't resist colors I see, so I pick up a few spools when I'm out in the shops.
Do you always match the color perfectly to your project? Yes, I try to.
Do you ever use contrasting thread? I have, not always pleased with the results thoug.
Do you use the same color in the bobbin as the upper thread? Yep.  Unless I'm lazy and the color is very similar (and the project isn't clothing).
What if a fabric has big areas of very different colors?  Hmm.  I go with the background/dominant color.
Do you have any tips or suggestions about choosing thread?
Can you show us a picture(s) of your thread collection?
Do you ever buy thread because you fall in love with the color (without a particular project in mind)?  Yes, I do.  Happily.
Do you “invest” in thread?  Yes, I love to buy specialty threads --  metallics or buttonhole . . . silk, etc.  I always check for thread at garage sales, etc.  and buy a whole lot if I can.
What types of thread do you have? (elastic, quilting, all-purpose, wool, etc.).  Quilting, silk, buttonhole, metallic . . . I probably have a sample of almost every type in my stash.
